Having an encouraging and supportive community as a Christian is essential not only for your spiritual growth but also for establishing relationships that are built on shared values and beliefs. In college, it can be challenging to find that group of people that you can trust and relate to. Whether it is through joining faith-based clubs on campus or joining a local church, there are many ways to find this community. While it may feel intimidating at first, it is important to put yourself out there and trust that God will provide you with the friendships you have been praying for.
Everyone seeks a sense of belonging, especially in college when we’re all trying to find our people. Sometimes all it takes is a simple introduction and letting others know that your faith matters to you. Who knows, you could end up meeting another believer or positively impact someone new. Either way, it’s a win-win. Even though God can guide people into your life, forming real friendships still requires your effort and willingness.
One of the best ways to find a welcoming Christian community is to go to the local churches in your area. It may take a couple of visits, but once you find the church that feels like home, it is important that you connect with others there. Arrive early or stay after the service to meet new people, or join a serve team. On a serve team, you’ll meet great people while serving in areas like children’s ministry, hospitality, worship, or outreach. There are so many ways to get involved at your local church, and this will allow you to meet many new people and find community. Oftentimes, churches will have young adult services or ways to connect with other students in college. This is the perfect way to meet other Christians who may or may not attend the same college as you.
Another great option is to explore the faith-based clubs on campus. Many schools offer an array of faith based clubs that meet different days of the week. From Young Life to Cru, it may be in your best interest to give some of these clubs a chance. Not only is this a great way to meet people, but allows you to connect to a Christian community right on your campus. If your school does not have any faith-based clubs, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to start one.
Once you find the community you have been seeking, you’ll realize everything was worth it. Real, faith-rooted friendships are encouraging, supportive, and honest. Having people who can challenge you and build your faith is a blessing, and I believe God intends for us to have them. We were created for connection. As it says in the book of Genesis, “It is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) Community is part of God’s original design; we are not supposed to go through life alone. Hebrews 10:24-25 also tells us, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together…,” showing us that walking alongside others strengthens our faith and encourages us when we are spiritually tired. It is so important to have people who will push you to be the best version of yourself and to be more like Jesus every day.
College goes by fast, so make the most of your four years by surrounding yourself with people that care for your well-being. Make this a time that you can focus on growing in your faith and your friendships.
