How to Build a Bomb AF Wardrobe This Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

With the end of winter, you can bet we’re starting to eye that pile of old clothes we’ve let accumulate in the corners of our closets. It’s time to think about throwing them out. But in the process of spring cleaning, we’re definitely going to be on the hunt for new clothes to replace the old. This is your guide to building a bomb AF wardrobe this spring, from the ground up.

Tip #1: Beauty starts on the inside

Too many clothes that we own tend to remain in our closets for way too long, even though we may not actually feel good wearing them. Your clothes are an extension of yourself; they should revolve around you and present to others the best version of yourself. Your clothing allows for others to see a “sneak-peek” of your personality even if they don’t know you. So what do you want to present? What are you inspired by?

Everything you wear should be about you and make you feel like a #BOSS. Start looking for clothes that make you feel both comfortable and confident. Both of those things are key to figuring out your own personal style.

Honing in on your own personal style is the first step to building a great closet from the ground up. If you have no idea where to start, try looking on social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram to figure out what style jumps out at you.

Style can revolve around themes such as bohemian or sporty but also around certain color palettes such as neutrals or bright colors. Find out what you’re drawn to, what you’re comfortable wearing, and most importantly, what makes you feel like a #BOSS.

Tip #2: The Clothing

When rebuilding your closet, the essentials are the foundation on which your whole closet will rest on. Essentials include items that are frequently worn and provide a baseline for the rest of your outfit. These differ based on personal style, but in general include go-to jeans, shirts and jackets. As these items will be frequently worn, it is incredibly important that you love how they fit and that they last a long time. These are items that you want to grab and throw on without thinking about it. If there’s any place to splurge for your closet, it would be here.

Accessories are what fine-tune your outfit to perfection, and they’re often the place where you can save some money. Certain stores will sell accessories like scarves, jewelry and headbands for fairly cheap prices. Don’t be afraid to use your accessories to accentuate your look! If you love more girly items, lace headbands and floral scarves will add dimension to your style. Studs and more metallic items will often compliment a punkier look very well. Find what you’re drawn to and what adds character to your essential items!

Tip #3: Mixing and Matching

One of the reasons why honing in on your personal style is so important is because it gives your clothes something to revolve around. This makes it easier to put together outfits with items that you have in your closet without worrying if they match. By placing different essential items together and changing the accessories you wear with them, you can make the same shirt that you wear on one day look completely different on another day. As well, how you mix-and-match your clothing is another way in which you can express yourself!

Now get out there and show the world the confident woman that you are!
