In an effort to expand my capsule wardrobe to reduce my long-term spending, I’ve started investing in wardrobe essentials: timeless, high-quality pieces built to last.
As a college student, I lack the disposable income necessary to buy all of the outfits I have saved on Pinterest. However, slowly but surely (through Christmas lists, birthday gifts and personal spending), I’ve acquired some of my favorite articles of clothing.
For anyone looking to build a capsule wardrobe of their own, below are seven versatile pieces I wear constantly and highly recommend.
Jeans
In my opinion, no good wardrobe is complete without a pair (or two) of jeans. Whether you prefer a straight, wide or skinny leg is up to you. Regardless of style, I’d recommend investing in a tried-and-true pair of Levi’s denim. I still wear the Levi’s jeans I purchased years ago, and they’ve held up incredibly well!
For a straight-legged, timeless silhouette, go with the 501s. If you’re leaning into the more recent low-rise trend, the Low Loose jeans have been my go-to. And for a classic, high-rise, baggy look, the Baggy Dad jeans are sure to please.
Cardigans
You can never have too many cardigans. One of my favorite wardrobe staples, cardigans are incredibly versatile. Layer them unbuttoned over basic tees on warmer days or wear them to add a pop of color under a coat during the winter.
No matter the season, I’d recommend J.Crew. Their cashmere line is high quality and insanely soft. The Perfect Cashmere Cardigan truly lives up to its name and comes in a wide range of gorgeous colors.
Dr. Martens
Get the Docs. I was gifted my first pair of Dr. Martens at 12 years old, and I still wear them now as a sophomore in college. They’ve lasted me through dozens of concerts and festivals, professional conferences and nearly all of my teen years.
The 1460s remain iconic to this day, but I also love the 8065 Mary Janes and the 2976 Chelsea Boots. No matter the style, one thing’s for sure: they’re built to last!
Jewelry
The easiest way to elevate an outfit is with jewelry. While I love a funky necklace or oversized earrings from time to time, simple hoops and chains are the pieces that truly stand the test of time. I know this because I wear my mom’s gold necklace from the 80s almost every day.
Jewelry can be very expensive, but it’s worth the investment; and you don’t need to buy everything all at once. I recommend starting with Gorjana’s 14k Gold Classic Huggies or their 14k Gold Basic Chain if you’re a gold wearer. In general, 14k gold (and above) or sterling silver pieces are worth the price. They can be worn in the shower, pool or ocean without any tarnishing.
Plain White Tee
If jeans are the No. 1 pant staple, a plain white tee is their equivalent for tops. If I had to recommend just one item on this list, this would be it.
The most versatile article of clothing, a good-quality plain white tee can be styled in countless ways. I’ve tried my fair share, and my favorite is more affordable than you might expect. UNIQLO’S Mini T-Shirt is a closet staple. Made with over 90% cotton, it holds its shape far longer than other tees I’ve owned.
Polarized Sunglasses
As a born-and-raised Californian, a former competitive swimmer and a lifeguard, I’ve worn my fair share of sunglasses. Style and brand aside, investing in polarized lenses is essential.
The difference is drastic. Your view is clearer, color appears more saturated, and, most importantly, polarized lenses protect you from harmful UV rays that can lead to long-term eye damage. While personal style comes first, I’d recommend looking into Ray-Ban for quality options.
Socks
Maybe this sounds like the least exciting item on this list to you, but during my capsule wardrobe journey, my love for socks has grown. You never realize how much a good pair affects shoe comfort until you experience it firsthand.
Unlike some of the other staples, I’m less picky about brands. I’ve loved socks from Nike, J.Crew, Carhartt, and Aritzia. Choosing a quality material, such as cotton or wool, matters the most. Length and color are personal preference (and also a great way to make your outfit unique!).
Starting a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean sacrificing personal style or refusing to purchase a trending item; it just means choosing pieces you’ll reach for again and again. From Levi’s denim to Dr. Martens and gold jewelry, these staples have earned their place in my own wardrobe throughout years of wear.
Here’s to a 2026 of sustainable wardrobe purchases you’ll love for years to come!
