5 Things You’ve Discovered if You’re a Liberal Arts Student Dating an Engineer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Sometimes they drive us crazy, but we all love engineers. From asking them to open our wine bottles without a bottle opener or needing help with our math homework, there are many reasons to love them. But there are some things you can only relate to if you’re a liberal arts major dating engineer student. Here are five of them!

They’re curious about everything… and you’ve learned that means EVERYTHING…

From taking apart their bike and then putting it back together again just to figure out how the breaks work, to wondering why the molecules bond the way they do in the chocolate milk they’re drinking, engineers want to know WHY everything happens. It’s fascinating to watch them figure out how everything works and it relates to how you’ve learned to question pretty much everything about society.

They thoroughly (over)analyze everything.

Going on a weekend trip? They can make an Excel spreadsheet of the fine details down to every dollar you’re projected to spend and how much time you have to spend in each place to make it worth it. Now you can use the extra money and time you saved from their efficiency to put toward another Excel sheet organized trip!

They’re creative.

It’s not in the same way as a liberal arts major would be creative in terms of writing or art. Instead, they’re great at creating things in their own way. The may not know how to write a paper, but they’re great at creating physical things. From building with Legos to 3D printing and building airplanes on CAD software, engineers make some really cool projects!

They’re quirky and loveable.

Their routines make them who they are. Owning a “Monday” shirt to be worn every Monday and HAVING to do laundry on Sundays makes them eccentric. It also inspires you to be better at planning when you’re going to have time to get your own laundry done…

They Strive for Efficiency

Efficiency is a key skill to have when you’re in college and you’ve got four homework assignments and a midterm and a project and two club meetings and a social event and a part-time job to work all in the same week. Engineers are usually good at wanting everything to be done as efficiently as possible. This is great when you need help building a schedule, organizing your Google Calendar, or working on your time management skills.

They’re Logical Problem Solvers

2+2=4 and that’s just the way it is, to engineers… But for liberal arts students, writing an essay comes with many open-ended possibilities for creation. Artists can make beautiful works of art in a variety of ways. Philosophy majors may question why and whether or not 2+2 ACTUALLY does equal 4. But when it comes to engineers, they’re logical problem solvers. If something doesn’t add up, then there’s a concrete reason why, and they’re going to try to find it.

Dating an engineer comes with its exciting moments and challenges. They’re there to help you stick to keeping organized, and you’re there to make sure that they break their routine every once in a while. Appreciate the balance you two have going and make sure you thank them for their math help by contributing some creative design to their next Solidworks project!
