10 Ways to Compliment Your Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Women are overwhelmingly evaluated on what they look like. Being complimented on appearance is fine when it is not sexually objectifying, but women should also be recognized for who they are and what they do. Women should be praised for our accomplishments, dreams, ideas, and talents. Here are a few important ways to compliment your friends:

1. “WOW you’re smart!”

When a friend helps you out with great advice, tell her how smart she is—and of course that you appreciate her help. Intelligence is important! You can also remind a friend of her brilliance to give her encouragement when she’s studying for a test or when she feels overwhelmed during finals.

2. “I love your outfit!”

If your friend or acquaintance (or even stranger) is wearing a cute outfit, compliment her! Putting together a cute outfit (instead of throwing on clothes) isn’t easy. Outfits are meant to be noticed! Tell your friend if she has great style and ask her for tips.

3. “You’re so much fun to hang out with.”

Your friends turn your boring afternoons into something fun. Remind them how much fun they are to be around.

4. “You’re hilarious.”

Tell your friends how funny they are or how they have a great sense of humor! I think a lot of girls would agree that being called funny is a thousand times more important than being called pretty. Every girl wants to be the next Tina Fey or Amy Poehler.

5. “You’re so talented!”

Whatever her talent may be (cooking, dancing, yoga etc), remind your friend how talented she is and how highly you think of that talent. It’s great encouragement!

6. “You’re great at what you do.”

What’s important to your friend? Maybe her job? Her grades? Her goals? Tell her that she is great at what she does and to never give up. Everyone needs the reassurance that they’re headed in the right direction.

7. “You’re inspiring.”

Everyone is inspiring in some way. Explain to your friend how she inspires you and others to be better people.

8.  “Great job!”

Did your friend do well on an exam or a speech? Did she get a job or win a game? Congratulate her right away and tell her that you’re proud!

9. “You’re a kind person!”

Is your friend really sweet and caring? Tell her! I know it always makes my day when someone tells me that I’m a nice person.

10. “You’re important to me.”
Just a few words that you should often tell your best friend, your mom, and everyone else in your life whom are important to you in order to remind them how much you appreciate them being in your life.

Compliment a friend once in awhile — make her day (and yours) a little bit better!
