Last week I finished reading the famous novel that has been blowing up “book-tok” for as long as I can remember, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The peer pressure got the absolute best of me and I just had to check out this book when I saw it arrive at the library I work at!

A small summary of the book: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a historical fiction novel written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The novel follows the story of Evelyn Hugo who is a fictional Old Hollywood star, who hires an unknown Journalist, Monique Grant, to interview her one last time.

My Review

This novel was truly an entertaining read! It’s been a while since I’ve been able to read a novel that wasn’t related to a class I was taking, so I enjoyed getting to read for fun for the first time this semester.

In terms of the plot, I thought Evelyn Hugo’s character was refreshing compared to a bunch of other YA novels that I’m used to reading. Her character was relatable, lovable, and very charming!

There is a huge plot twist at the end of the novel that I definitely was NOT expecting. For the sake of not spoiling anything for those who have added this to their list, I won’t give much information. However, I will say that it includes the unknown interviewer, Monique. How exciting!

On the other hand, there were a lot of things that I was expecting more of. I wish Hugo had more “romantic” marriages but I still enjoyed reading about all of her relationships. I also like how the novel has great representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

Do I Recommend It?

For me, this novel was a 7/10. The novel was definitely entertaining but I’m not sure if I would read it again. However, I definitely recommend it to those who have been curious due to all the hype the book has been getting on TikTok!
