How To Get Your Haunt On This Spooky Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Something I have found as I grow up is that it is harder and harder to get in the spirit of the holidays. For the last few years, I haven’t really felt like it was Halloween, and that upsets me, because Halloween is my favorite holiday. Here are a few tips for getting into the spirit of Spooky Season.

1.    Go to a pumpkin patch!

Pumpkin patches are the perfect way to get in the spirit! Some of them are a little more intricate than others, so whether you go to a small one or one with more activities, its still fun. I would recommend the Underwood Family Farms, because they not only have a pumpkin patch, but they have a corn maze, tracker rides, animals, and food!

2.    Decide on a Halloween Costume

No matter how old you are, its super fun to dress up for Halloween, even if you’re staying in and handing out candy. As you get older, the possible costume list gets bigger, because you can go a little more inappropriate with the outfits, but in a funny way. There are so many costumes to choose from and going to the stores can be so fun!

3.    Watch scary movies

I’m not the biggest fan of scary movies, but I do enjoy them more around Halloween because it helps get me in the spirit. Grab some friends, set up a fort in a living room or bedroom and start a marathon! Netflix and Hulu have a variety of selections, both good and kind of stupid, but still enjoyable.

4.    Go to a haunted house!

Haunted houses are always a classic around this time of year and are always a must on my list. I haven’t been, but there is a haunted house at the Janss Mall in Thousand Oaks that is supposed to be amazing and horrifying. Even if you don’t like this kind of thing, it’s always fun to go with some friends.

  5.    Go to scare fests

There are a few around the area, like Halloween Horror Nights, Fright Fest, and Knott’s Scary Farm, and all of them are great. Some, like HHN, are scarier than others, but they are still fun. It can be a little expensive, but grab a group of friends, split parking, and have a horrific time. You are promised some screams.

6.    Get a Pumpkin Spice drink at Starbucks

I know this one seems cliché, but it is one of the best ways to get in the spirit of the season. Even walking into Starbucks and smelling the pumpkin spice helps me get into the spirit.

7.    Carve pumpkins

Carving pumpkins is one of my favorite Halloween activities because I am terrible at it which somehow makes me good? Pumpkins aren’t terribly expensive, and neither are carving sets, so it can be super fun to sit down and carve for a couple of hours. And as an added bonus, roasted pumpkins seeds are the best thing ever!

8.    Candy!

There is candy everywhere around this time and it is pretty cheap so stock up and gorge! I know candy isn’t healthy, but it’s Halloween so technically, the entire month is like a cheat day.

9.    Decorate

Get some decorations and do up your room or house with Halloween spirit. Places like Target and the Dollar Tree have really cheap decorations that are super cute.

10.    Spooky Socks!

This one is more of a personal opinion, but stocking up on spooky socks is a must for me. They are sold pretty much everywhere and they have so many different styles. It’s so cute to wear different spooky socks each day and to pair cute outfits with them too. So grab your socks and some sweaters!

Happy Spooky Season everyone!
