Ask Gumby: “Scared Sh*tless”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Adulthood scares me. Graduation scares me. I avoid the career services people like the plague. Seriously, if one more person comes at me with the YOU NEED AN INTERNSHIP spiel… I’m going to loose it. What’s a good way to handle things like internships without getting overwhelmed? Or to tell people to back off/ cope with it?

-‘Scared Sh*itless’

Dear “Scared Sh*itless”,

Opinion One: We are going to begin to answer this with a quote, “If you are not afraid of what you are doing, you are not growing as a person.” The future is scary because soon enough, everything is going to change. But, it is time for you to face what is ahead and be prepared for this approaching ‘deadline.’ Just log onto Career Services and make an appointment, or begin searching on CLU Postings. Career Services is such an amazing resource.. you will not regret meeting with them. They will actually be able to make you more comfortable with the idea of adulthood. The most important thing for you to do is to put yourself out there. So many students are out there who are in the same boat as you. This whole thing is a learning experience that you need because you are really living if you aren’t out side your comfort zone.

Opinion Two: We all get that dreaded question, “What are you doing after college?” If you answer you have no idea, that is perfectly okay not to know what your future holds.  Now, you could tell them, “Back off it is none of your business.” If that is a bit too harsh instead you can answer, “I know what is best for me and I will take your advice but at the end of the day, I am in control and will make these decisions for myself.”

Opinion Three: When it comes to internships, for some, the scariest thing is applying for them. And with applying comes being accepted or rejected. But, there is no need to fear rejection. Look at it this way, if someone tells you know, don’t be upset because it is already something that you aren’t doing. The longer that you procrastinate, the worse you will feel as the deadlines are approaching. Handle it like a Band-Aid, that way it wont be as painful. Everyone handles internships differently because all internships are different. But, find an internship that you love and then you won’t be as overwhelmed since you are doing something that you love doing.

Remember, embrace your youth and don’t spend time fearing the future. If you live that that, then you will never get to enjoy the moments you have now. We totally understand what is is like to be scared. A healthy amount of fear is perfectly okay.
