Welcome to Ask Gumby, advice from the Regals of Cal Lutheran.
Gumby, or Enormous Luther, presides over the campus of California Lutheran University with his arms stretched wide to encompass everyone with his love and grace. This help column tried to remember these values in answering questions, so that every answer is considerate and supportive. We’re opening our arms to your questions!
In each article there will be a question, submitted by a reader, and multiple different outlooks and opinions on what should be done in response to that question.
I’m an out of state student and I can’t help but to get homesick when everyone goes home for the weekend. Any tips to combat this?
Dear Lonely Student,
Option One: During the first semester this is going to be hard to combat, but after a while it will get easier. Until then, find a group of friends that actually stays on campus during the weekend. Of course this is not the easiest task, but you will be suprised to see how many people actually stay here over the weekend. Cal Lutheran has A LOT of out of state students. If you are having trouble with this, talk to your RA about holding a weekend program about things to do over the weekend in or around Thousand Oaks. Now you will be able to find people to do this new things with!
Option Two: Enjoy having the dorm to your self! Get a job, pick up a new hobby, work on your bucket list! Use the weekend as time to enjoy your independence. Once you realize you can basically do whatever you want, you will enjoy it so much better. Also, you can use this time to get ahead on your homework. Do your course readings in the quiet because now not only are there minimal distractions but your will have more time to do other things during the week day.
Option Three: One of our very own Her Campus Cal Lutheran writers wrote about, “How to Deal with Homesickness in College.” This is a great article to read about overcoming your home sickness and getting into the swing of things. We would highly recommend taking a look at it.
