Name: Scarlett Sawyer

Year: Junior Graduating in 2017

Major: Elementary Education

Minor: Psychology

Hometown: Easley, SC

Why did you chose CofC?

I chose CofC on a whim, I had visited the campus and fell seriously in love with its beauty. I was unsure about the distance from family and it was a different choice than all but one of my friends from Easley, and leaving was a difficult decision.  A major reason for my choice was that I was granted the Teaching Fellows scholarship for CofC.  This allowed me to follow my passion of teaching in the most beautiful city.  I have never regretted my decision because it has brought me amazing friends, great free time activities,  connections, and a place to call my second home.

What are you involved with on campus?

Teaching Fellows, Project Playground, Order of Omega, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Mu, Reading Partners, #GeekEd

Do you have any advice for other students who want to be a teacher?

My advice would be to have fun and get involved. Also, make connections while you can because there are so many opportunities to do so! But dont forget, while having fun, you need to focus on school and your future. And a little teacher tip, always have a plan and a backup plan in your pocket.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan on starting my career as an elementary teacher in South Carolina to fulfill my teaching fellows scholarship. Then I would really love to go to grad school for counseling or early childhood education.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

In 10 years, I see myself teaching and having a family. Hopefully, really settling down.

What is your favorite memory from CofC?

My favorite memory is joining Phi Mu because I have made so many lifelong friends! It’s great to be a part of something, I know I belong and am with my sisters who are like me and have similar values! It’s something that you can hold onto for your whole life.

Who inspires you?

My mom inspires me because of her love and strength. I have been lucky throughout my life to have always known that I was loved and cared for.  My mom has always been my rock,  keeping me going and my spirits high. She has shown me what it means to be a Christian and how to live a life the path of Christ.  She has shown me how to be a good teacher and care for others and be selfless.  I strive to be like her everyday and admire everything she is.
