Recently, our queen Taylor Swift released her latest album ‘Midnights’ on October 21, 2022, at 12:00 a.m. Her 10th studio album is about the things that keep her up at night and within 24 hours it quickly became the most listened-to album on Spotify. In honor of Taylor, I will be reviewing a few of my favorite songs from her new album and discussing my thoughts on them.

You’re On Your Own, Kid

I am absolutely in love with this song. I have no critiques of any kind. This song has been stuck in my head, and on every single playlist since I heard it. This song has come at the right time for me and I honestly feel as if it were made for me, as cliche as that sounds. I love the lyrics in this song, and they hit hard in a personal way for me. I love the way the song builds up and then effortlessly changes into a more positive light. The way that the song starts off in a moment of being afraid and ends in a more encouraging light provides reassurance to listeners. If you ever feel alone in life, like you’re all on your own, I highly suggest you listen to this song.

Snow on the Beach (feat. Lana Del Ray)

While this is one of my favorite songs on the album, I do have one criticism about it. My critique is that Lana Del Ray is barely audible in the song. She doesn’t have a moment in the song that is specifically for her, and as a big Lana stan, it honestly disappointed me. I was so excited for these two wonderful female artists to come together in one song, and while they sang wonderfully, I wish Lana had more of a moment in this song. Overall, though, I absolutely love this song and I cannot stop listening to it. It is now on all of my playlists, and if you haven’t heard it yet, I strongly suggest you give it a listen.

Vigilante Shit

This song is the boss girl energy everyone needs in their life right now. I love the energy and the beat behind this song. The opening lyric is “draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man” and I loved it. As someone who went through their emo phase, it honestly made me fall in love with this song instantly. The energy of this song is about revenge and it makes me feel so energetic and pumped up. I loved the lyric “don’t get sad, get even” and I think that Taylor absolutely killed it with this song. You should definitely give it a listen.

Sweet Nothing

This song has one of my favorite beats. I love the way the song starts, and the lyrics are just phenomenal. When Taylor says “all that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothings” I almost cried because of how much I could relate. I loved everything about this song. If you’ve ever felt too sensitive, or too attached to something or someone, this song was definitely made for you. I loved the vulnerability of this song, and highly recommend it to anyone in need of a little reassurance that they are not alone.

Dear Reader

This song is included in Taylor’s 3 am edition of “Midnights” and was my favorite song in that edition. The beat and the lyrics of this song are absolutely perfect. I loved how this song made me feel like I was reading something Taylor wrote to herself in a journal. As someone who writes when something is bothering them, this song made me fall in love with writing more. I love how this song is set up like it’s advice from Taylor to the world. Overall, this is a great song and it was honestly my favorite one on the 3 am edition.

Karma

Similar to “Vigilante Shit”, “Karma” provides the boss girl energy this album needs. I loved the lyrics in this song, and the message as well. When Taylor said “karma is a cat, purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me” I quite literally screamed. I love the love Taylor has for her cats. As your local crazy cat lady, I loved every minute of it. I love the message that karma will always catch up to your enemies. This song makes me feel reassured, and not to mention, it’s overall such a vibe. The beat mixed with the lyrics and the message makes for a great song.
