In an average weekend, a typical college student can spend tens or even hundreds of dollars eating out, partying, and on frivolous purchases.   Why not take a small portion of that spending, just once, and put it towards something you support and learn from?  We all know that it doesn’t take much to fall in love with the College of Charleston; show your commitment to C of C by giving back to the school that gives you endless opportunities.  This is the idea behind Committed to Charleston, a new club on campus that stresses the importance of student involvement and gives students a chance to show off some school spirit.

Committed to Charleston’s founder Joe Busch had a vision for a student giving society on campus, and rounded up a crew of six other student leaders from various organizations at the college.  College of Charleston’s Alumni Association quickly signed on board, helping the founding members stir up interest for the club.

The club asks for only one thing from its members: a one-time donation of $17.70 (a historically significant sum – 1770 was the year the college was founded) that will go directly towards the College of Charleston Fund.  This fund provides scholarships to academically motivated students who might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to attend college.  With 40% of the student body receiving some form of scholarship aid, such as those made possible by the College of Charleston Fund, it is likely that you may know someone who will be impacted by your gift.

Any student here on campus may join, and there is no requirement for membership aside from the initial donation.  Alexander Henderson, a senior and founding member of the organization, says that although nothing is required of members, the club still plans to have monthly meetings and host networking events for those who are interested.  And with people already joining C2C from all different sectors of campus, the club is bound to become a great tool to meet and connect with others from the college.

“I see Committed to Charleston becoming a natural thing that everyone here at the college does, something students will sign up for as soon as they come onto campus,” explains Henderson.

At the chartering ceremony, slated for November 1st in Stern Center, new members will have the opportunity to sign a framed charter for the organization, which will later be hung on the walls of the Stern lobby.  To make your donation today, visit the Committed to Charleston website, where you can pay your $17.70 securely by credit card.  You can also like C2C on Facebook and keep up to date with the first meetings and events later on in the semester.  Don’t miss out on your chance to become more active on campus, meet new faces, and be a founding member of this exciting new organization.
