Ever since I moved down to Charleston in 2018, I often found myself wondering out to King St. Between classes, I would peek inside House of Sage after leaving Caviar and Bananas with no intention of buying anything. Twenty minutes later I would be rushing to my next class with three more punches in my House of Sage punch card while swinging two light green shopping bags down Saint Philip St. I moved to Charleston South Caroline from a small New England town, where the only tourist trap we really had was an apple farm, with the most amazing homemade donuts. The transition of moving out of a small northern town into a southern city, not only affected me mentally but affected my wallet as well. I found myself “peaking” into every store on King St, wanting to fit in as a “southern bell” by shopping at stores such as Two Cumberland, Dress Up, and ShopXS.

It did not take me until my Sophomore year of college to notice I was constantly spending money, in the unfamiliar shops I had come across. To lighten my closet, and earn back the money I had lost, I started a clothing Instagram, trying to sell everything I hardly wore. I listed clothing for much cheaper than I had bought them, hoping just to sell a large quantity. The clothing Instagram did not work out well, for most of the people wanting to buy my “southern clothes” where my northern friends in which shipping stole most of my money.

It was not until one day when Poshmark popped up as in Instagram add that I considered looking more into it. Only knowing the app’s name, I downloaded it with no intention of how it was going to affect me. I later found out that Poshmark is a platform used to sell and buy slightly used clothing with other users. I took all the photos from my clothing Instagram and uploaded them into my “closet” on Poshmark. With no clue of how the platform worked, I set my phone aside. I woke up with hundreds of notifications and with $165 earned from selling my clothing..it was honestly that simple. As a college student with a love of shopping, Poshmark has helped me earn money quickly with hardly any work included.
