5 Budget Friendly Costumes to Get You Through “Halloweek”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

October is synonymous with Halloween. Of course Christmas is great, Thanksgiving is nice, and I am always game to wear green on St. Patty’s Day, but Halloween takes the cake and, as soon as October finally rolls around, it is time for the planning to start. If you are like me at all, you are ready to go all out with your costumes, but you want to avoid shelling out 50 bucks for a skimpy “Pocahontas Dress” which is really just a suede piece of fabric that barely covers your own candy corn. Multiply that 50 dollars by five nights (since we all know Halloween stopped being one night a year when we stopped trick-or-treating) and you are looking at some major bank account damage that is sure to raise Dad’s eyebrows. So, here is a breakdown of your Halloweek and the costumes that come with it, without the hefty price tags.

Night 1- Animal

To start off your week of Halloween festivities, you want to go slow. Do not pull out all the stops for your first night- you need to pace yourself. Tonight is the night you go with the cliché, but always fun, animal costume. Pull out the animal ears (bunny, cat, mouse?) from third grade and a simple color coordinating outfit. But don’t skip the whiskers and nose. This is the big leagues, y’all.

Night 2- Disney

Now, to get the ball rolling on your Halloweek, we are going to slowly progress your level of costume. For your next night, try going as Jessie from Toy Story, or Pocahantas. This requires a little more effort, but you are guaranteed to have either a cowboy hat or beaded headband somewhere in your closet. Go with the plaid shirt and jeans (boots if you are feeling really crazy) for the cowgirl effect or the braids and simple dress for a Pocahantas vibe.

Night 3- Group costume

For the third night, it is time to spice things up. Enlist your friends to do a group costume. These do not have to be complicated at all; think simple. Go as The Minions from “Despicable Me” with yellow shirts and jeans, or The Pink Ladies from “Grease.” Just try not to fight over who gets to play Rizzo and who has to be Sandra Dee. Better yet, go as the Thunderbirds and call it even.

Night 4- Throwback

For the fourth night, try a throwback. As an excuse to finally wear that flower headband you convinced yourself you needed for some reason, go as a hippie. Wear a flowy dress and let your mane go wild because, let’s be honest, you probably were not going to do your hair anyway.

Night 5- Go all out

Finally the night we have all been waiting for is here. Tonight is the night you reveal the costume you actually put effort into. Whether you are going as Superwoman, a princess, or hopefully something less overdone, this is when you unveil the outfit you either spent countless hours or dollars on. Whatever it is, own it. After a full week of Halloween festivities, you deserve to let loose!
