Why Girlfriends are So Important

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

The memories you make with your friends are some of the best times of your life. When you find your true friends, you will be forever grateful. Your friends are people that will always be there for you, a shoulder to cry on, someone to complain about your day or share in the excitement of something great that has happened.

When you are in college it is difficult to balance everything. It’s hard to make time for everyone; you have school, cute boys, and a million extra things you need to tend to.  I have recently learned that no matter what, your friends are one of the most important things and they are meant to be cherished.  Friends give you a lot of things other people cannot. Friends let you be yourself and share your feelings.  All of your inside jokes, dance parities, and eating junk food are silly memories you will cherish forever, even though they seem so little at the time. They are someone you grow with and become your own person. They help you get over your fears, help with that midterm you are really nervous for, or bring you Ben & Jerry’s when you are feeling sad.

Friends can offer new perspective and always tell you the truth.  We all need a friend that will tell you those baggy sweatpants that are so comfy probably aren’t the best decision to go out in.  Your friends will never leave you even when everyone else does. College is your first big step into the real world, and even though it is scary, your friends help you enjoy this scary time. I’ve realized as I have grown older that lasting friendships don’t come easily. If you find someone that changes your life for the better, you need to work hard to keep them around because good friends are hard to find.  Never take friendships for granted and work hard to let your friends know that you care about them. Make time for them and do small things so they know you care.

Sex and the City has given us seasons of laughs, tears, and an insight of the happiness friends can give us. As Carrie Bradshaw says, “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.”

So enjoy the time with your friends as much as you can. Pretty soon you will be off working a real job, married, and having kids.  Enjoy being young and silly. Stay up late, eat lots of food, laugh, cry and tell secrets; but know that your friends will always be there for you and will always be a phone call away. I honestly couldn’t survive my time in school without my girlfriends. They are my rock, my support system and always make me laugh.  Cherish your friendships; they are the experiences you will remember forever.
