Make it Stop! 5 Fads That Need to Fade in 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Fads: We’ve all seen them. Maybe we thought they were funny or cool for a day (a week maximum), but some people are keeping these fads alive for a bit too long for my taste. Here are the 5 fads I hope never turn into trends.

  1. Bacon: Before I begin, I love bacon just as much as the next person, but who decided to make it a thing? Delicious? Yes. Funny? No. It seems like people on the Internet can’t go a day without talking about how “epic” bacon is and using it in the punch lines of their jokes. Don’t even get me started on bacon flavored, well, everything. Why can’t bacon just be bacon?
  1. Mustaches: The first time I saw “I mustache you a question, but I’ll just   shave it for later” as someone’s Facebook status, I’ll be honest; I laughed out loud (IT WAS BRILLIANT). Then I saw it for the 30th time and I realized I needed to re-evaluate who I was friends with on Facebook. Mustaches are upper lip hair people, there is no need to accessorize with them or wear them on a shirt to seem ironic.
  1. Transformation Tuesday: This is a newer fad on Instagram where people upload a side by side comparison of themselves at a young age and a super attractive picture of what they look like now. I’m assuming this is popular because most people don’t know that adults tend to look different now from when they were 3. Isn’t one designated old photo on “Throwback Thursday” enough for one week?
  1. Harlem Shake: Honestly I’m not even quite sure what to say about this one, mostly because I don’t understand why it exists.  If someone wants to explain the social significance of flailing around like a monkey for 30 seconds and posting it on Youtube, by all means go ahead.  Until then, stop.
  1. Angry Birds: I’ve never been more disappointed than when I saw a middle-aged man in public wearing an Angry Birds shirt (with matching hat).  I’ve seen the game, I’ve played the game, and frankly I enjoy the game!  But coordinating your outfits with iPhone apps is downright creepy.

Honorable mentions: YOLO, swag, apparel with YOLO or swag on it, keep calm and carry on, Gangnam style, sequin Uggs, and sloths.
