Lions, Tigers and Chippewas…OH MY!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

The Tigers take a 2-0 lead in ALCS series over the Yankees

Pitch by pitch and hit by hit; the Detroit Tigers are well on their way to the World Series by defeating the New York Yankees in first two games of the ALCS series.
When the two teams met for game one on Saturday night, the Tigers took a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the ninth inning. As Yankee Stadium became empty and quiet, the Yankees bullpen became energetic and optimistic as Tigers pitcher Jose Valverde gave up four runs and a tie of 4-4. The game remained tied until the 12th inning when Tigers Delmon Young hit a double to begin the rally for the Tigers.
As Yankees star player and captain, Derek Jeter fractured his ankle on an attempt to make a big play, Detroit would score again in the 12th inning and would result in an eventual 6-4 win for Detroit.
The Tigers continued to impress in game two, as everything seemed to click for them. Pitching by Doug Fister was good, hitting was good, and their luck was good, as the umpire missed a call that would have been in the Yankees favor. After a solid performance by Detroit, they came away with a 3-0 final win over the Yankees.
Game three will not only be held in Detroit, Detroit’s MVP pitcher, Justin Verlander will also be the starting pitcher.

The Chippewas fall short against the men in uniform

Lights, cameras, football; Kelley/Shorts Stadium was filled with excitement, CMU students, and Navy veterans as our Chippewas got set to battle against Navy on Friday night.
Chippewas quarterback Ryan Radcliff had a solid performance; passing for 139 yards in just eleven completed passes during three quarters of play.
On the other side of the ball, the Chips struggled greatly, giving up four touchdowns and a field goal- giving Navy a lopsided victory of 31-13. The Chippewas have now lost three games in a row in their season, and have been beaten by Navy all three times they have faced each other.
The Chips will get set to kick off their streak of home games by facing off against their conference rival Ball State. Kickoff for the game is at 3:30pm, However, Mount Pleasant will see crowds of people all weekend as they celebrate Homecoming.
The Chippewas fell to a record of 2-4 and are second to last in our conference. They will try to get a spark for the remainder of the season by getting a victory over Ball State.

Lions start to show sign of life in win over the Eagles

After having a disappointing start to their season, the Detroit Lions started to show a sign of life today in their overtime victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Lion’s quarterback, Matthew Stafford had a solid performance throwing the ball for 311 yards, rushing for a touchdown, and throwing one interception. The Lion’s top receiver Calvin Johnson played a vital role in today’s victory with six catches for 135 yards. Johnson came up big by making an outstanding catch that set up the Lion’s kicker, Jason Hanson for a field goal that sent the game into overtime.
Jason Hanson was a top performer in today’s game, kicking a total of four field goals, one to send the game to overtime, and one to get the Lions a victory.
The Lions still have plenty of room to improve, giving up 132 yards in penalties but made up for it on the defensive side of the ball. Detroit’s defense did a remarkable containing Michael Vick, who is elite quarterbacks in the NFL.
The Lions improved to 2-3 and forced the Eagles to fall to 3-3 on this season. Detroit will travel to Chicago to play the Bears next week. The Bears (4-1) are division rivals that are currently in first place, and should be a much-anticipated matchup from both franchises and their fans.
