iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c: Are they really worth it?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Whether you watched Apple’s new release minute-by-minute waiting to see what next big thing they had in store, or you logged into any social media site, I’m sure you have all seen Apple’s brand new iPhone 5s and 5c. I’m usually not one to care much about technology debates, but this was the second time I’ve bought the latest version of an iPhone and the new one came out 2 months later. So frankly, I was annoyed and wanted to know what I could have gotten with my money if I had waited for the new release. After doing some research, I’m sticking with the iPhone 5, hold the “s” and “c”, please.

Not to say that the new iPhones aren’t cool or don’t have awesome technology, they just simply aren’t worth the upgrade from an iPhone 5. I’ve researched and broken down a few reasons why you’re better off saving 100-200 bucks.

iPhone 5s Features

64-bit processor: To be honest, I had to look up what this meant because I’m not THAT tech savvy. All this basically means is that apps will download faster and games will be more vivid. This also allows very intricate games to look awesome. So if you’re a huge gamer and all about graphics, I’d say go for it. If you’re not, this processor won’t make you any better at Candy Crush…So stick with your 4s or 5.

Camera: The jump from the 4 and 4s camera to the 5 was incredible, and was definitely one of the features that made the iPhone 5 a necessity. Especially for people who hate having to use a digital camera but want the same picture quality, and of course for professional instagrammers. There are little changes in the 5s camera such as better photos in low light, a flash with better color tones, and a slow motion video that takes multiple shots when you take a picture so you can choose what suits you best. I agree, those do sound cool but when you can get a free camera app that edits photos, why spend 200 bucks just yet?

Fingerprint Sensor: The first thought that came to mind when I heard this was “CREEPY”.  I promise I’m not super paranoid about Apple having our fingerprints one file…but seriously think about it. A numerical pass code is tricky enough for randoms who steal phones to figure out, and that is fine by me.

Color Options: I like having options, I mean who doesn’t? But for some reason the gold colored iPhone just reminds me of when Dolce and Gabbana designed a Razr, remember those?

Anyway, you have to put a case on it regardless or have a constant fear that you’ll drop your phone and shatter it to pieces. Save yourself the anxiety and buy a cute new case instead.

iPhone 5c Features

This phone is essentially a downgrade from the iPhone 5 because you get identical software but with a thicker plastic shell opposed to the sleek metal shell. Not to say this phone is a complete waste of time, it’s especially attractive to customers who don’t want to spend as much and customers in the tween market. If you’re upgrading from a 4 or 4s however, the 5c is a more affordable upgrade than the iPhone 5.

The biggest feature with the new phones is iOS 7, which anyone with a 4 or above can download when it’s released in a couple of weeks. So if you’re in a pickle on what to do about your next upgrade, I say iPhone 5 or bust.
