Benefits of Social Media and Networking

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

As we all may be well aware of, social media has become an essential part of the way our society functions today. A lot of times, people think that social media and/or networking sites are to blame for people not being able to have strong person-to-person communication skills, along with always being on an electronic device that connects them to these networking sites. What those people may not be aware of is that social media actually has it perks.

Great for small businesses

Everyone has a little bit of an entrepreneurial spirit in college, when sky’s the limit, so this may be helpful when starting up a business! When starting up a business, the biggest adversity is usually how to attract customers to your service or good. One of the easiest ways to do that is to market your company over social networking sites like Twitter, and even Facebook. It is an easy way to generate the buzz about your company around your community. With that buzz, your company has the potential to grow just by the things you have advertised over the Internet. It’s also a great way to connect with other businesses. It can help make connections that could be helpful in the future. Offering special offers and discounts to the customers over email and Twitter may be the most effective of connecting with customers because it is instantaneous.

Helps with grammar and punctuation

Something that may not be as obvious is that social media sites can actually help with grammar and punctuation. I know that this sounds a little silly, what with, all the abbreviations and shortened words we tend to use over these sites. However, the reality is, the more you use social media sites and post statuses, tweets, blog posts, whatever they may be, the more you are more likely to notice your grammar and punctuation mistakes and it can actually help prevent grammatical errors.

Helps your brand

This last one may be the most useful for college students looking for an internship or after college when looking for a job. Social media is the best way to help represent your brand in the best way you can. When I say brand, I’m referring to you as a social media user. When you’re interviewing for a job, companies will always look at the way you use your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and so on. It’s always best to make sure you’re posting things that you would be okay with a future employer reading. LinkedIn is the perfect way to put yourself out there in the work field. It’s the quickest and easiest way for other companies to see your résumé.
