I’ll bet good money most college students have heard the phrase “there’s no better time than the present.” College is the time of exploration and “finding yourself”, right?! What better way to do that than to get involved.
It’s mid-September and everyone seems to be settling in. Homesickness is fading away and your routine seems to be getting easier by the day. This is the perfect time to start expanding your life on CMU’s campus. Central is excellent at providing opportunities for students and making them easily accessible. If you’re looking to get involved on campus, here are a few options:
1. Go Greek! Even if you’ve never thought about it before, it never hurts to look into. Joining a fraternity/sorority provides such a unique experience to your years at Central. Going Greek offers a great opportunity for students to meet and form bonds with others that last a lifetime.
2. Join a Registered Student Organization! Registered Student Organizations, also known as RSOs, provide a great chance for students to further explore their personal interests. At CMU there seems to be an RSO for almost everything and, even if it takes a bit of searching, there is something available for every type of student.
3. Join an Intramural Sports Team! IM sports teams range from flag football to table tennis, so there is no shortage of options. You don’t necessarily have to possess any extraordinary athletic ability to join, but it is always a good time. Maybe your floor or a group of friends is trying to start a team and looking for more members! Keep your eyes open and go register!
4. Find something to volunteer for! If you naturally enjoy helping others, you should have no problem with this one. Keeping your eyes open for emails or signs around campus is a good way to find volunteer opportunities as well as visiting the volunteer center located on the bottom floor of the Bovee University Center. Whether you are interested in working with the elderly, for CMU, mentoring children, or Special Olympics there will always be a need for volunteers.
5. Look for an organization on campus associated with your major. For example, journalism majors would look into joining CM Life, and music majors would look into joining a choir group on campus. There are plenty of people also in your major and, odds are, there is already an organization for it. It never hurts to network with others that will eventually be joining the career field with you.
Whether you have a little free time, you are looking to beef up your resume or just meet new people; there is a place for you at Central! A great place to browse for groups and events on campus is www.cmich.orgsync.com, so give it a try and see if you find something that catches your eye! Campus life is as diverse as the students themselves, so enjoy it. You are only in college for a few years and every student should make the best of it! Getting involved is an excellent way to create a great experience and love your school!
