5 Things to Consider When Getting Dressed for the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Girls worry about their appearance no matter where they are, what time it is, or who they’re with, and the gym is no exception. I admit, I put on a little cover up and concealer before I hit the gym to cover up dark circles and spots on my skin, but I don’t worry about makeup half as much as I worry about what to wear.

Here are the top five things to consider when dressing/getting ready for the gym:

1. Wear the correct bra– First of all, wear an actual sports bra. Second of all, wear a sports bra that fits. Not only can wearing the wrong bra be uncomfortable for you, but also the other gym attendees. Here’s a guide on how to choose the right one for you: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/best-bras-for-breast-size

2. Check to see if your spandex is see through– As it is with sports bras and making other gym attendees uncomfortable, see through spandex also makes others uncomfortable. The most basic test for your spandex, whether they’re compression shorts, leggings, or yoga pants, is to bend over, and ask someone you’re close with if they can see anything inappropriate. Or do it yourself in front of your full length mirror, which I know all you girls have. Do this test before you buy workout clothes too. If the majority of your pants are see through just make sure you don’t wear them on days you’ll be doing squats or bending over a lot.

3. Wear the right underwear– Again with the uncomfortable factor. Not for the other gym attendees, but for yourself. Picking a wedgie is not only awkward, but it has to be uncomfortable and annoying to workout with the wrong underwear. Seamless underwear, or has become known as “yoga” underwear, is the most comfortable and breathable. Not only is the style of underwear important, but also the material. 100% cotton is probably not your best bet, and some materials can actually cause some problems in your lady-business. Here’s a guide on workout underwear material that has useful information about what to wear under there: http://www.fitsugar.com/Health-Risks-Concerning-Underwear-Exercise-17843580

4. Dress for the specific body part you’ll be working out– If you go to the gym with a specific plan of attack on what body part you’ll be working out, make sure to dress accordingly. For example, if you’re working out your legs I would suggest wearing shorts and if you’re working out upper body I would suggest wearing a tank top, etc. The reason being that when you can actually see your muscles working you can gain a better understanding of them, as well as make sure you’re preforming the exercise right.

5. Last but not least, please do not wear strong perfumes– I know we all want to smell like vanilla and fresh flowers, but when you’re working out and sweating your pores are already producing smells that may sometimes be unpleasant, but smell the same as everyone else. Like sweat. Do you like breathing heavily when a person walks by with a lot of cologne or perfume on? No, especially not when you’re working out and already feel like you’re dying. Put on some deoderant and call it a day.

I'm an 20-year-old college girl trying to get my life together. I'm majoring in News Editorial Public Relations some kind of Journalism at Central Michigan University and hoping one day I'll love every minute of it.Eat, Pray, Love is the first book I've ever read whose style is comparable to my own. Read that book, like it, and you might have a sweet tooth for my writing. If not, well, I'm not one to lose sleep over people not liking me. Other than writing my days are spent in class, at the gym, or in my room tearing my hair out because I procrastinated on my homework. Did I mention I like cats?
