Stop putting other people’s majors down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Butler chapter.

Okay, so I’m only a freshman First Year (whatevs Butler), but I’ve been here for almost seven months and I still have some questions.

I’m only sharing my biggest issue with college, or well I guess the people here, so this story isn’t like 339284902384 pages long. You’re welcome.

Why in the literal fuck do people put down other’s majors?

I get it, people are petty, they’re gonna complain about their workload and how terrible their lives are. It’s just gonna happen, but why do they have to make their major seem SO much harder than yours?

First of all, NO MAJOR IS EASIER OR HARDER THAN ANOTHER.

Listen up, each major has its own individual struggles. Whether it be memorizing some giant calculus formula for an engineering test, or creating a lesson plan to explain to a bunch of 12 year olds what the mitochondria of a cell is, they’re both really frickin hard and I couldn’t do either.

Now that’s not to say that education and engineering are the only hard majors, I’m a journalism major and quite honestly, it’s kicking my ass.

Between the ridiculous amount of rules I need to memorize from the AP stylebook, and the hoops I have to jump through just to get anyone to answer my emails or sit down for an interview, it’s a lot.

But that’s any major, ever. Some of us write a shit ton of papers while others take tests. Those things are equally as hard. No major has it worse.

Whatever you decide to study, you’re gonna pull all-nighters, you’re gonna be stressed out of your mind, you’re gonna have a shitty professor, and it’s gonna be hard.

So, for the love of god, stop acting like your major is better or harder than the rest of ours’, because it isn’t.

About a month ago, I was having lunch with a friend who tried to convince me that being a business major was harder and more practical than going into the medical field.

Ney ney, darling, that’s not how things work.

A). We need doctors just as much as we need business people

B). A doctor will have just as many struggles as a business professional

C). I don’t know, but THEY’RE EQUALLY AS DIFFICULT AND PRACTICAL. GOD DAMNIT.

If you couldn’t tell, this topic is something I’m pretty passionate about. I just can’t get past the fact that people need to constantly be having pity parties. I get it, you don’t want to write a 18 page honors thesis on giraffes and it’s probably not an easy thing to do, but the girl working her ass off in the police academy is working just as hard as you.

We’re all on the same struggle bus, so be a pal and encourage your friends when life gets hard. Don’t try to one up them with how much worse your major is.

Even this puppy has struggles, she’s struggling just as much as you. You wouldn’t make sweet little puppy feel bad about her problems, would you?
