Behind the Scenes with Anthony

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Butler chapter.

Anthony Murdock is a junior, 20-year-old, Political Science and Religion double major. He was born in South Bend, but raised in Indianapolis.

Her Campus (HC): What are you involved in on campus?

Anthony Murdock (AM): Coordinator for the Diversity, Education, and Advocacy Committee for SGA, cofounder and director of initiatives for BtB. Chief Brand Ambassador and Executive Director for power moves only. Then a membership in a variety of other organizations.

HC: Why did you create Bust the BUBBLE?

AM: My cofounders and I founded the movement in the first place as a response to the BLM protest that was held on campus on Dec 14th we felt that there needed to be an organized response to the hateful language that was put on sites like Yik Yak. More long term we understood the perspectives of students of color of PoC at PWIs was not systematically recognized so we believed there needed to be an organization that did so in a way that Butler University couldn’t dictate or regulate.

HC: When it comes to starting an organization from the ground up, what should people keep in mind?

AM: Well, Bust the Bubble is a movement, not necessarily an organization, but I can speak for the Diversity Education and Advocacy committee, when I first joined it, it was the first year Butler ever had that committee. You have to have an open mind, patience, and remember that nothing ever happens in a vacuum. In creating an organization or starting an initiative everything is multilateral, and should be in some ways, because nothing happens alone. That is not how this world works so in doing something you have to be aware of how one thing you are doing can affect several other things in your organization and community. Servant leadership is also extremely important in starting an organization.

HC: If you could describe your time in SGA with three words, or a choice phrase, what would they be?

AM: #PowerMovesOnly. The reason I say that is because in the duration of my SGA experience there were times when things were going smoothly and there were times when things were not moving at all. But I just had to remember that you don’t  just do something to finish an event or get the president there. You do something with intent. You do something to take a step towards getting something greater accomplished. I think that is what power moves only embodies. Everything that you do has to be done with a purpose.

HC: If you could go back to your first year, and do one thing differently, what would it be?

AM: When I was on campus my first year I think I got involved in 6 organizations. 6 organizations, that’s crazy. I think I would have spent some more time getting used to college.

HC: If your life could have a soundtrack perfectly curated for you from one artist, who would that artist be?

AM: J.Cole
