With fall in full swing, the holiday season is fast approaching. For many, this is a time of happiness, however, sometimes all the lights, cookies,  holiday-themed movies, and special episodes aren’t associated with positivity. The holidays aren’t a good time for everyone. Be it due to the loss of love, the pressure to be with family you don’t feel close to, a reminder of financial struggle, or loneliness, the holidays often serve as a difficult time. Sometimes the fact that other people seem so happy can make the experience all the more isolating. What’s important to remember during this time of year is to practice forgiveness of yourself.

Accept that this is how you feel. Acknowledging that the holidays bring up negative emotions is important in taking care of yourself. Remember that you don’t always feel the way you do right now, and focus on the things that make you happy during other times of the year. It is definitely not easy to shift focus to positive things when you feel engulfed by painful emotions, but if you don’t try, it will be worse.

Remember that self-care isn’t always glamorous or cute. Make sure you don’t let your sadness get the better of you by continuing to get out of bed every morning and showering, drinking and eating. It might seem obvious, but small things like brushing your teeth and getting dressed make a difference in your willingness to continue. Talk to people who make you feel less alone or hopeless. Allow yourself to grieve, but make sure you are continuing to take care of yourself and push through.

Nothing lasts forever, including winter, and you can make it through. You only get better at handling your problems as you grow, and eventually, you will know what works for you when it comes to coping with the pain that the holiday season might bring.
