If you’re like me, you’ve already binge-watched all ten episodes of Amazon Prime’s new mini-series, Daisy Jones & The Six, and desperately want more. A fabulous TV adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s national bestseller, Daisy Jones follows a Pittsburg native band on its rise to fame in the LA music scene. Set in the 1970s, viewers get a taste of the golden age of rock and roll – from fringe bangs to flare pants.

So, what makes the show a perfect time capsule of California sound, 70s culture and style?

The aesthetic commitment.

Sunset Strip, swanky nightclubs, an impromptu wedding in Greece – Daisy Jones & The Six has it all. Filmed directly in the monumental locations the show alludes to, the series not only feels real, but is real. On top of that, actors Riley Keough (Daisy Jones) and Sam Claflin (Billy Dunne), are truly singing in the show. Taking voice lessons through Zoom during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Keough and Claflin perfected their sound while the rest of the band learned their instruments before filming. Suki Waterhouse, known for her role as the keyboardist Karen Sirko, actually released her debut album as a musician after learning how to play piano for the show’s audition!

What truly brings Daisy Jones to life, however, is the bohemian-esque capsule collection that transcends television. Inspired by the whimsical outfit choices of rock band Fleetwood Mac, costume designer Denise Wingate meshes suede fabrics and draping silhouettes; crafting iconic outfits for each character. Incorporating an assortment of bell-bottom pants, scarves, platform shoes, and floral knitwear, the fashion choices unerringly communicate the band’s distinct personalities. For Daisy herself, Wingate recalls drawing from popular looks of Cher and Linda Ronstadt, accentuating Daisy’s long, red hair and fiery personality. When dressing Karen Sirko, she opted for darker fabrics, cool leathers, and edgier cuts, taking inspiration largely from American songwriter Patti Smith. My favorite, though, has to be the outfits curated for Camila Dunne, Billy’s wife and first love. Paying homage to Ali MacGraw, Dunne is adorned in several flowy dresses, floral patterns, and midi skirts, sporting effortlessly chic undone hair.

In correspondence with the cohesive fashion decisions, MaryAnne Hennings, in charge of hair, and Rebecca Wachtel, the show’s head makeup artist, add necessary finishing touches to each character’s appearance, accentuating the rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic. With bold waves, shaggy fringe, and chunky layers, Hennings expertly recreates 70s rockstar flair. In monumental scenes such as Daisy’s overdose, Wachtel dramatizes Daisy’s eye makeup, using heavy liner and dark smokey shadows to communicate her destructive state.

If that’s not enough to convince you to watch the show, Daisy Jones is currently nominated for two MTV awards despite it only being released a little over a month ago!
