Is it a Yay or Nay: First Date on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

February is a month in which people often start or end relationships. Of course, if you think about it, it’s a big time for all things ‘love’ being that Valentine’s Day is on February 14th. A few of my close friends recently ended their relationships. Now, celebrating their time being single, we all had a brief debate on finding romance during the season of love. It came down to this question: Is it too much to have a first date on Valentine’s Day? Below are the thoughts and opinions we had through this deep conversation.

Considering the “Nays”:

Having a first date on Valentine’s Day can be intimidating. For some people it’s a really big day and doing something romantic could be a big deal. It might bring back old memories of other lovers or may feel like too much of a commitment. When I first thought about having a first date on this day of the year, I was leaning towards the “Nay.” Many of my friends feel the same way. One of my friends (we’ll call her CN for anonymity) says that she goes into first dates with no expectations and good vibes only. She feels that going on a first date on February 14th leads to your date having expectations of something more. It may shift the whole vibe of your first encounter with each other. Another one of my friends, PV, said she feels that it leads to the feeling of having too much pressure. So, is having a first date on Valentine’s Day a ‘nay’?

Considering the “Yays”:

Time to look at the positive, the optimistic, the hopeful: the “Yay”! After sitting on this question for multiple days, it led me to lean towards the “yay.” I am a firm believer of trying new things and doing something new. Yes, you may have first dates on any ordinary day, but how funny and memorable would it be to tell your friends and family about the time you had a first date on Valentine’s Day! It may sound cheesy or cliché when people say that life is short and that we need to take more risks, but for me, it’s starting to feel true. You never know what a little spontaneous action may bring to you in life. A first date could bring you many more. You never know when you’ll meet that special someone, so I think “yay”! Take the risk!

Considering whether or not to have a first date on Valentine’s Day is a decision that you have to make for you! Don’t be afraid to take a chance, but do it on your own terms. Some of you may feel that it’s a “nay,” and that’s perfectly okay! But if you feel it’s a “yay” then go for it!
