Your Guide To Finding A Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Even though it has been consistently in the negatives, summer will be here before you know it. However, the distant thought of summer brings a wave of panic. You know you need money, and you know you will go insane if you have to resort to your high school job once more. This can only mean one thing; you need a summer internship. If only it was that simple though.

Here is your guide to conquering the struggle that is landing a summer internship:

1. Know what you are looking for! It’s common sense; the first step to finding a summer internship has to be knowing what exactly it is you are looking for. What field do you want an internship in? Where will you be living for the summer? Does it need to be a paid internship or could it be unpaid? Are you looking to work at a non-profit or a business? These are all questions you should be asking your self.

2. Do you research! Once you know what it is you are looking for, get started on some research. Check out different organization or companies that fit your criteria. Many of their websites will have job or internship postings available. Even if they don’t, reach out and express your interest in what they are doing.

3. Go to BU’s Career Development Center! One visit to the CDC will change your life. Meet with one of the career counselors, and they will steer you in the right direction. There are also many workshops, resume and cover letter review sessions, and mock interviews at your disposal at the CDC. Even the website is incredible! The CareerLink is an online hub for internship and job listings that you have access to as a BU student and should take advantage of.

4. Start networking! Believe it or not, your family, friends, peers, professors, and advisors, have faced or are currently facing the struggle to find an internship. You are surrounded by this incredible source everyday that can give you advice and opportunities to look out for. Get yourself out there; you never know what a simple conversation could lead to.

Happy searching!
