Winter is Coming: Essentials You’ll Need

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Halloween is over and November is here. Only a few more weeks till Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the winter air is quickly setting in. Before you know it, the ground will be piled with snow and the east coast will be in a phase of eternal winter. For us college students, winter can be kind of annoying and a big hassle. Having to walk around campus in the slush and cold and snow can be really troublesome. Or having to walk outside for just five minutes to reach the dining hall or the convenience store. Or just putting in the effort of waking up, getting dressed and getting to class.

So here I listed some essentials most of us college students find necessary for the winter. From closest essentials to lifestyle essentials, these things should help you get through the winter!

For closet essentials, you should definitely have these items:

·      Warm jacket – you’ll definitely need a warm winter jacket to help you through this time. Maybe a few jackets would be nice. Quarter length jackets, peacoat, down jacket, rain jacket/windbreaker, fur jacket. Basically any jacket that will keep you warm would be ideal to have!

·      Warm boots – the last thing you need are wet, cold feet from walking around in the slush. Sturdy, warm, boots that will keep your feet dry are a must as part of your winter needs. Uggs, L.L Bean, and Sorel, are good brands to choose for your boots! Keeping your feet warm and dry can make a huge difference during the winter times.

·      Socks, hats, gloves, scarves – don’t over look these little accessories, they make a huge difference when trying to keep yourself warm! Fuzzy socks, beanies, leather gloves, and circle scarves are ESSENTIALS for surviving the winter. Make sure you invest in these four accessories!

·      Tights, leggings – like most of the things I have already listed, keeping your legs warm is important too. Basically, winter is just a test to see how much of your body you can cover and not expose to the evil coldness. Leggings and tights should be a part of every girl’s closet whether or not it is winter. But these pieces are definitely needed for winter because they can act as layering pieces. Wearing a thin, sheer tight under your jeans actually makes a difference!

·      Sweaters – nothing beats oversized sweaters in the winter. Not only are they comfy but they keep you warm and stylish! So many different types of sweaters for so many different types of occasions.

For living essentials and things you should just have:

·      Hot cup of tea or coffee or hot coco – nothing beats having a hot drink during the winter time. Having a cup of warm tea or coffee once you wake up not only warms you up instantly, but it just makes your day that much better. The best part of winter is being able to snuggle up in your blankets or being all bundled up and holding that hot cup of goodness.

·      Hand warmers – don’t over look these little boogers! HotHands Hand Warmers are just little packets of sunshine! These little things work for a solid 6 hours keeping your hands and body warm! Stick them in your pockets, gloves, even shoes and you’ll be set for the winter.

·      Food – winter calls for laziness and not wanting to go out so make sure to stock up on food. When you don’t want to leave your cozy bed or dorm, you’ll be set for an entire day inside! Especially when the snow storms approach, you will not want to go outside, so make sure you have plenty of food around!

·      Lotion and chapstick – the crispy winter air means dry skin and chapped lips. Make sure you keep your skin hydrated and moisturized! Also try using coco butter to keep your skin feeling healthy and looking radiant!

·      Friends – winter sometimes can limit the things you want to do, but with a good group of friends you won’t be missing out on anything! Having a happy and good time with your friends will make your winter go by that much faster! Have a girl’s night in and make hot coco, snuggle under some blankets, watch some romcoms, and gossip! Winter is also a great excuse to find someone to cuddle with! Most importantly, just surround yourself with people you love and before you know it spring will be just around the corner!
