You probably have tons of time on your hands now (because, you know, the virus that shall not be named), and your only option is to chill at home for at least the next month. You have a major decision to make—which series should you start watching next? Consider watching the High School Musical spinoff, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (I know it’s a mouthful) on Disney+. Even if you don’t have Disney+, think about subscribing because you’re going to have a lot of free time coming up.

You may have already seen a preview of the new series and laughed at its cheesy humor and cliché plotlines. However, if you give it a chance and watch past the first episode, you will probably find it more entertaining than you originally thought.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a mockumentary, so think of it as The Office crossed with High School Musical. It “documents” the students who go to the high school where they filmed the HSM movies as their revamped drama program puts on the musical. Although the characters aren’t our original favorites, the show makes you root for the new characters. If you need even more reasons to watch the series, read on.

The episodes are full of HSM nostalgia.

No, the cast isn’t the same, but there are reminders of the original movies in every scene. Also, there may be a couple of cameos of actors from the original (*cough* *cough* Lucas Grabeel).

The old songs get new spins to them.

The character Ricky sings Gabriella’s classic breakup song, “When There Was Me and You,” from Troy’s perspective. A boy is cast to play Sharpay. These twists to your childhood favorites will for sure find their way to your daily playlists.

There are new bops altogether.

If you’re on Tik Tok at all, you’ve probably heard the song, “All I Want,” which is from this show! “Wondering” is also a personal favorite, perfect for when you need an emotional, empowering song. The show is basically a musical within a musical—the characters breaking out into song every episode (but in a more natural way)—so there are countless new songs to add to your queue.

It’s a more accurate portrayal of high school.

It’s refreshing to watch a show that doesn’t make high school seem so intense and mature and with situations that would never happen in reality. While High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a little more dramatic and childlike than true reality, but the friendships and points of tension seem more genuine and realistic.

Joshua Bassett

You will fall in love with both the actor, Joshua Bassett, and his character, Ricky, simultaneously. Look at him! And besides his looks and his singing voice, he’s just a sweet and charming person, and if you follow him on social media and watch his stories, then you’ll see that!

Even if you’re still skeptical about whether this spinoff series will live up to the original High School Musical franchise, give it a chance! Besides, sticking to the status quo was never cool anyway.
