Why We Love Street Style Photos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Street style photography in essence says to every girl: that could be you. When photographers snap photos of men and women gracefully jumping through puddles or clicking their heels up the steps up Lincoln Center–to get to the next fashion show, the people photographed are not models, nor do they necessarily have “high fashion.” They don’t have stylists putting their looks together.
What makes street style so unique and likable is the individuality seen in everyone’s outfit. The people photographed all have one thing in common which is their love for fashion. That love, whether it means leather or plaid is represented in what they wear.

With fashion week, blogs like theSartorialist.com and streetpeeper.com becoming extremely popular posting looks from all around the world, snapping pictures of the most risk taking Fashionistas out there. These sights, along with many others, don’t look to post pictures of models or celebrities but rather look for the people who incorporate their own sense of style in a truly unique way that anyone around the world can appreciate.

Street style photography is also not always glamorous. It’s not like the fashion magazines with makeup and hair stylists and alluring sets: it’s real life. Photographs surface of woman struggling in the rain or wind or wearing dysfunctional and impractical layers upon layers of clothing. But at the end of the day, it’s the unique style of so many around the world that makes fashion so versatile and loved. If you are one day lucky enough for Bill Cunningham or Scott Schuman to take your photo, be proud of your individual style and flaunt it. Someone may look at your outfit and think that could be them too.
