Why Last Christmas Is a Must-See for Every Rom-Com Lover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

If you enjoy crying at sappy love stories and falling for dreamy male leads, you must love rom-coms. There is absolutely nothing better than sitting on a big comfy couch and stuffing your face with ice cream while watching a rom-com. And if you especially like British holiday rom-coms, then you will adore the latest swoon-worthy film, Last Christmas. Here’s why.

Henry Golding

Henry Golding is reason enough to see this movie. After rising to stardom after playing the main male role in Crazy Rich Asians, the British actor has quickly stolen America’s heart and become the handsome rom-com actor that everyone knows him to be. He plays Tom in Last Christmas, a very charming and charismatic man who seems too good to be true. His quick humor and heart-melting smiles fill the screen, and you will never want to look away. If you’re going to see the movie for anyone, see it for him.

Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke is an icon, a legend, the Queen of Dragons. Also a British actor, she is quirky, talented, and perfect for the role of Kate in Last Christmas. Kate is a dysfunctional and frustrated young woman who works as an elf and has always had a dream of singing––but she only begins to find her way when she meets Tom (a.k.a. Henry Golding). If the cast of this movie isn’t enough for you to see the film, then I don’t know what is.

It’s named after the iconic song “Last Christmas” by Wham! (WARNING: potential spoilers)!

We all know the lyrics to Wham!’s classic holiday love song: “Last Christmas I gave you my heart / But the very next day, you gave it away.” Reading into these lyrics might give you a good idea of what happens in the film. Maybe something to do with a heart transplant? Heartbreak? Broken love? I won’t give away any spoilers, but let’s just say the song tells a pretty convincing story…

All the holiday spirit in the film.

This movie is packed with holiday spirit––Santa, elves, Christmas lights, the streets of London, Christmas caroling, ice skating, even Frozen. The Christmas shop where Kate works is filled to the brim with fun holiday knickknacks, the London streets are bright with colorful lights, and the holiday concert for the homeless shelter at the end is full of so much cheer and happiness. Every scene in this film reminds you that winter break is oh-so-close and soon you’ll be back at home cozying up by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate!

For all of these reasons and more, Last Christmas is absolutely a must-see for any rom-com lover like myself. You may be a crying mess by the end of the film, but what’s a rom-com if it doesn’t make you shed a tear or two?
