Fall Recess, the first official break of the fall semester, has arrived. And if I were to ask my fellow collegiettes how they are feeling about this time of the year, I would imagine they’re all ready to gather around the Thanksgiving table and get a REAL BREAK from BU. I would concur, but I would also have to admit that I am pretty anxious about the inevitable situations that may arise. In the next five hundred words, I will reveal every personally nerve-racking aspect of this break to the HCBU community, from conquering the long train ride to dealing with grandparents who may or may not approve of a facial piercing.
- On Wednesday morning, I will be taking an 8:15 AM train from Boston to Trenton. This makes me nervous because—let’s be honest– it’s been a while since I have woken up before 7:30 in the morning! And I have to get to the station in a timely fashion; with my Vera Bradley tote hung over my left shoulder and my Timbuk2 backpack over my right. That’s only the first stressful part. Next is the actual transport to New Jersey. My train ride is a total of three hundred and eighteen minutes; five and one-third hours. WHAT COULD I POSSIBLY DO FOR THAT LONG ON A TRAIN?! Well, I do have some work I could possibly do. But, I doubt my coach seat will permit me to thrust all my schoolwork onto my lap or (if I’m lucky) onto one of those convenient three-by-two tables. So maybe I’ll buy some books and magazines on my kindle to occupy my time and strike my intellectual fancy. If these options do not last five hours, maybe sleeping will.
- For many families in America, Thursday night dinner will consist of a huge turkey, mounds of stuffing and potatoes, sweet cranberry sauce, and pies of every fruit and vegetable imaginable. Ah, yes…the Thanksgiving meal. It’s quite an anxiety-inducing atmosphere, wouldn’t you say? For me, this holiday is my least favorite because I am recovering from Eating Disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). Thanksgiving is the ultimate test to see if I can keep calm in a situation bombarded with the “enemy”. But I have heard many times that food isn’t the “enemy” unless you make it that way. So, for all the HCBU-ers feeling triggers from Thanksgiving festivities, I want you to know that you’re not alone and that you are beautiful inside and out.Â
- On Friday, I’ll be visiting my grandparents in Maryland. I talk to them once a week and recount all the great things happening in my life at BU. I have not, however, told them about my new nostril piercing. I know that it isn’t a tattoo, which they are very strictly against due to religious reasons. Nonetheless, I’m still really nervous that my grandparents will convince me to get rid of it. And my answer to that will be: unlike a tattoo, it’s temporary. Problem solved.
P.S. If any HCBU-ers do have a tattoo they would like to keep under wraps, I wish you the best of luck. I suggest you wear a cute outfit (to divert their attention from any permanent fashion statements) and strategically placed accessories to conceal the ink! - Lastly, I am anxious (in a super excited way) to see my friends from my high school. Every now and then, I’ll text or message someone on Facebook, but it is always ut short by homework or another obligation. Plus, I would much rather be in my friends’ presence than depend on electronic interaction. Fall Recess is the perfect time to reunite at the local hookah café downtown, play Just Dance in someone’s basement, or just brag about our colleges. Ahem, we all know that BU will win in the last option!
I hope this helped calm anyone else’s anxiety about Fall Recess! I wish everyone happy travels and a joyful beginning to the holiday season.Â
