When Is It Okay to Start Listening to Christmas Music?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

When is it okay to start listening to Christmas Music? An age old question we have all considered…and probably debated.

When is it actually time to start listening to Christmas music?

Some people start as early as the summer, some people start once the fall season begins, and some people only start in December. Personally, I think the time to start listening to Christmas music is the day after Halloween (AKA November 1).

The fall is full of amazing holidays. Halloween is my favorite holiday of all time, so I’m always in full spooky mode until November. There are so many good Halloween songs to listen to for all of October, so why would I listen to Christmas music when I can be in the spooky spirit? Like me, a lot of people would prefer to push off Christmas music until the Halloween season has run its course.

Once November begins, we can officially move from spooky season to holiday season!

However, a lot of people would say that Thanksgiving is the best holiday for many reasons. I mean, you can’t go wrong with delicious food, football, family, and friends. So, people who have Thanksgiving as their favorite holiday often argue that you can’t listen to Christmas music until Thanksgiving is over.

According to my dad, you can’t blast Christmas music until Santa makes his entrance at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

It’s easy to see why people would want to start listening to Christmas music as early as possible. The holiday season is a time of warmth, love, laughter, and family. Nothing makes you feel quite as happy as cozying up with some hot chocolate and watching Christmas movies while snow falls outside.

It’s extremely tempting to want to feel in a Christmas mood, even when Christmas is months away.

For those who don’t live in Boston, we just had our first big snowfall on October 30. Don’t get me wrong, Halloween will always be my favorite holiday, but that snow really had me wanting to listen to some holiday music. On top of that, the Jonas Brothers just released a new Christmas song on October 30, and it was extremely difficult for me not to listen to it immediately.

Point is, I get it — Christmas music is amazing.

So, for me, the answer to the question of when you can begin listening to Christmas music is November 1 (once Halloween is over).

The answer to this question is different for everyone, and at the end of the day, you should start listening to Christmas music whenever you want. If it makes your heart happy, then listen away!
