Remember those sneakers we had when we were in elementary school? They would light up every time we stepped? To us, those were like the Christian Louboutins of the playground, the most chic sneaker you could have.

But as we grew up, our style did too. We went from Velcro sneakers, slowly evolving to the ballet flat, which seems to be the go-to style for everyday footwear. But what ever happened to “day” sneaker? When did it become social suicide to be spotted in your Nikes outside of the gym?

As New York Fashion Week 2012 began, the sitings of a statement day sneaker were more prevalent then the Hermès Birkin. Fashion editors and beauty bloggers alike were sporting their brightest and most comfortable sneakers, pairing them with the most unsuspecting outfits such as crisp white blazers, pleated skirts and even dresses. The best example of the most extreme incorporation of sneakers into an outfit is the Man Repeller’s, Leandra Medine, who paired her Marchesa wedding dress with custom made, blinged out, wedge sneakers.

I for one am completely in favor of this new trend of daytime sneakers. Who doesn’t like making a statement and being comfortable at the same time? Some of the best day-sneakers that I have seen are the customized Nike Free Run 2.0, the many different takes on Isabel Marant’s Beckett wedges sneaker, and the classic Chuck Taylor Converse sneaker.

Surprisingly, working a pair of sneakers into your more casual outfits without looking like you just came back from a jog on the Charles is much easier then you’d think. Depending on what outfit you’re wearing, you can decide what type of sneaker you’ll put on. For a more laid back weekend look, you can opt for the Converse, available on Amazon.com. If you’re going for a more put-together look, you can slip on the great wedge sneaker that Ash makes, available on Shopbop. For a sportier sneaker that makes a bold statement, you could try the Nike Free Run 2.0, which can also be customized in a variety of neon hues, on Nike’s website.

Whether it is a Converse or a Nike, as the trend of day-time sneakers continues to catch on, I’m sure our feet are thanking us.

Grab those sneakers at some of these websites:

Keds
Foot Locker
