Sex Ed for OUR Generation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Sexual Education is a topic that is heavily controversial throughout most schools. Whether you have to watch films from the 1970s about reproductive organs or witness your high school’s basketball coach slide a condom onto a banana, one thing is certain: traditional sex ed is outdated.

A few weeks ago, the Her Campus Boston University team had the opportunity to have an open discussion about sex. With an abundance of donuts and cookies, our team and a campus representative for Tabú created a safe space to talk about sex on campus.

Tabú, pronounced “taboo”, is a new app that urges young adults to normalize sex. The Tabú app has four main categories to explore: a feed of informational articles, a question and answer section, a profile page and a frequently asked questions tab. Their team consists of sexperts in all forms. Porn stars, sex therapists, and doctors lend their knowledge to write articles and respond to users.

It can be admittedly awkward to talk to your friends about sex, but push the comfort zones and have a genuine conversation. If you need help, use the following resources:

-Tabú: The app is relaunching in January, so download it now or in a few weeks to get honest information about sexual health.

-Student Health: With services like The Condom Fairy, use this campus resource to get STI/STD checks, birth control and anything else you may need.

-Sexual Assault Response and Prevention (SARP): Sexual Assault is a relevant problem on every college campus. If you ever find yourself in a situation or need help after an incident, call 617-353-SARP. The number is conveniently located on the back of Terrier Cards.

-Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Activism (CGSA): Located in the basement of the GSU, this is a safe space to do homework, talk about your life, be an activist for the LGBTQ+ community and attend events.

-Planned Parenthood: Boston University is lucky to have a Planned Parenthood on the edge of our campus. If you ever need anything (birth control, cancer screenings, gyno check-ups and abortions among a LONG list of services), head to thier location at 1055 Commonwealth Ave.
