My Ten Tips on Visiting Colby Farm’s Sunflower Field

Colby Farm is located in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and it is known for its beautiful sunflower field. Unfortunately, the sunflower season is coming to an end shortly, so here are some tips if you ever want to check it out (and of course, why wouldn’t you?)

  1. 1. Check out the best timing to go.

First things first, check out the best timing for the sunflower blooms on their website: They are open May through December, but sunflowers are only in season late summer into fall, so make sure to check out the precise dates!

  2. 2. Figure out transportation.

From Boston, you can either take the commuter rail to Newburyport or drive (it’s a little less than an hour's drive). It’s not too far and definitely worth the trip!

  3. 3. Make sure you arrive early!

The field opens at 9 am. If you come early, you miss all the traffic (and can avoid having to deal with other people...and paying $10, as I did). It’s also just so much more peaceful to be there when there isn’t a huge crowd.

  4. 4. Bring cash for parking!

They only accept $10 in cash for parking, so leave your debit card at home!

  5. 5. Pee before and after you go!

The only restrooms on the farm are Porta-potties, and I’m really not about that. Honestly, I don’t think anyone is about that.

  6. 6. Wear clothes you don’t really care about!

Of course, you can dress cute, but avoid wearing white shoes, are they are definitely gonna get dirty walking around on the field. If you want to be one with the sunflowers, like me, you’re going to want to walk right into the field, where bugs and flowers will be touching you left and right.

  7. 7. Take lots of pictures!

That’s a given. Make sure you seek out the tallest and fullest sunflowers, which will probably be further into the field.

  8. 8. Beware of bees!

Tons of bees are there.  They’re all super cute and minding their own business, so make sure to mind your own business too and they probably won’t bother you.

  9. 9. Check out the souvenir shop when you’re done!

The shop sells the farm's local products, drinks, pumpkins, and sunflower souvenirs.

  10. 10. Check out Newburyport after.

Downtown Newburyport is such a cute little place. I recommend going to Abraham’s Bagel Shop and Plum Island Coffee Roasters. If I had more time, I would’ve loved to explore more.

Colby Farm and Newburyport, in general, is a wonderful place to visit, especially in the summer! I definitely recommend going on a quick day trip with your friends and/or family during the sunflower season!
