Meet BU’s Art Club Co-Vice President: Crystal Sealey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Crystal Sealey is a sophomore at Boston University, majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Business Administration & Management. Crystal is also one of my close friends and a fellow art club member. Despite her busy schedule, I was able to sit down with her to talk about her role in Art Club.

Responses have been edited for clarity.

Cameryn Richardson: I hear that you are the vice president of the Art Club! How is that going for you? How do you like the position?

Crystal Sealey: The position is great! It’s a little bit easier since there’s another vice president that’s a little bit more familiar with the club, so I’m walking in her footsteps. It’s a very collaborative job, so I may not be dealing with the finances too much, but I help out with tons of other stuff. Since everything is online, it hasn’t been too hectic I think.

CR: Can you explain a little bit about what you do as vice president?

CS: Honestly, it’s a little bit of everything (except for finances, we have a treasurer for that *laughs*). As a vice president, I help out with the meetings. Each one helps figure out what the theme is gonna be. I’m also helping with social media—promoting different events and other clubs that reach out to our club for that promotion. This year I also introduced a monthly art contest, so I’ve been facilitating that. It’s been going well! I know a lot of people are stressed, so it’s a good outlet. [The Executive Board’s] been picking winners. The E-Board is very collaborative, so even though we may have our own specific responsibilities, we still work as a group. We meet every week, so it’s been really chill. Great vibes—and you get to socialize with new people.

CR: How did you get into the Art Club and eventually became vice president?

CS: Cameryn and I would go to the Art Club almost every week last year. That was one of the only things we did semi-consistently. I liked it because it wasn’t a huge commitment. There are many clubs on campus where if you don’t attend some of the meetings, you might get kicked out, but I liked that Art Club was very chill and that we didn’t have to worry about going all of the time. When I found out at the end of the year that they had a couple of openings for E-Board, I decided to try out because we were cool with the E-Board last year, and they knew us. I figured I might as well try out for it, and I definitely do not regret my decision!

CR: Tell us about the art contest you started since joining the e-board!

CS: Yes! It’s a super chill thing. It’s a way to get people to make art every month, even if they don’t attend our meetings. It’s only for the fall semester right now, but we might keep it going through the spring—we don’t know yet. Each month has a different theme. October’s theme was vintage, then November’s theme was gratefulness. People can submit work however they see fit and interpret the theme whichever way they want. Then, at the end of the month when we get all of the submissions, we choose a winner for the beginner level and the advanced level. The winner gets a couple of bucks from Amazon! I’ve loved the submissions that we’ve gotten; they’ve surprised me. I sometimes forget that people who aren’t in the arts can still do art. For example, we got this great piece from a STEM major, and I was so shocked and amazed. It’s been really great.

CR: What’s happening with the Art Club in the next few weeks?

CS: Our next club meeting is this week, the last club meeting of the year! It might be an open Zoom call for whoever wants to come in and make art with other people during finals. We’ll have an art contest theme for December by the 1st, so be sure to submit some art! We’re having it run until the 31st, so technically, after this semester—just because it doesn’t make sense to run for half a month. Feel free to do a little bit of art after finals week and submit it!

Check out Art Club on Instagram and be on the lookout for December’s art contest theme!
