Moving into a dorm is super exciting, but it’s also kind of weird at first. You go from having your own bedroom at home to sharing a tiny room with a stranger, and suddenly you have to figure out how to make a completely new space feel like yours. At first, dorm rooms can feel pretty plain and almost like a hotel room, but adding little personal touches makes such a difference.
My favorite way to make my room more cozy is by hanging up pictures of my dog, Polaroids of my friends, and collages of my favorite memories. It helps to be able to see pictures of people that I miss while I’m at school, especially on days when I feel homesick. I also have cute posters and other decorations on my desk that remind me of my room at home.
My bed is probably the best part of my dorm room because I spend so much time there. I can change into comfortable clothes after a long day of classes and either watch Netflix, scroll on TikTok, or call my friends. I have soft blankets, cute pillows, and even some of my favorite stuffed animals from home. They make my bed so comfortable and make my room feel so much more familiar.
Another important aspect of making a dorm room feel like home is the lighting. Dorm rooms often have very bright overhead lights, which can be very harsh, especially at night. I prefer to use a small lamp or even some fairy lights to create a more relaxing and cozy atmosphere in my room.
The small things can make a big difference, too. My favorite snacks are in my desk, my makeup is organized, and my favorite sweatshirt is always within arm’s reach. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to make your dorm room feel comfortable. Sometimes, the things you already love can make the biggest difference.
Making a dorm feel like home takes time. It’s hard to get comfortable in a new place, especially when so much of it is unfamiliar. Eventually, though, pictures, decorations, and routines can make a dorm feel less like a dorm and more like your home.
Happy decorating!
