Major Trends of Spring-Summer 2018 Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

As the winter season fades away, and spring is just around the corner, I wanted to focus on the major trends of the upcoming season. The Spring-Summer 2018 season has a lot of variety, offers something for everyone, and is a very bright, bold and colorful season. There’s no better occasion to enhance your wardrobe than the beginning of a new season, so here are some major trends of SS18!

1. Pastel Color

Ice cream tones are fashion’s favorite treat of the new season. This season is all about ice cream hues that come in a variety of sugary shades from lilac to lemon sorbet. Be ready to wear strawberry pink, melon, peach and baby blue tones. Also, don’t hesitate to mix and match the weirdest combos possible. Even a combination of lemon, lilac, purple and beige could be in accord.

2. Logomania

Fendi! Gucci! Balmain! Versace! Balenciaga! Calvin Klein! Logos have been the biggest trend throughout the 90s, and they are back for good. The logo trend of spring/summer 2018 is bigger, bolder and powerful than ever before. The more the better. From Fendi’s head-to-toe monogrammed combinations to Balenciaga, Versace, and Gucci, brands no longer want to hide. It is a great time to turn yourself into walking billboard for your favorite brands.

3. The New Trench-coat

The trench-coat has always been in fashion, but it has been reinterpreted away from the classic tan tones with new fits, materials, and patterns to turn into a statement piece. Celine made it even stronger with double trenches, Alexander McQueen embellished it with satin floral embroideries, Balenciaga painted it into black and deconstructed with denim touches, Loewe combined it with another trend of fringes. The new season puts no limit to the variations, and keep in mind that a trench-coat is forever, it is an investment piece no matter the style.

4. The Ugly Sneakers (aka Dad Sneakers)

In my opinion, this is the biggest trend of the season and my personal favorite. The uglier, the more oversized, the better. Balenciaga ‘Triple S’ is undoubtedly the best seller of them all. It is crazy how people search for Balenciaga sneakers; they are constantly sold out everywhere. For instance, the brand is opening a store just for the specific model. Designers don’t care about the aesthetics anymore when it comes to sneakers, they choose to design them with unusual color combinations, extremely thick soles, in a very ‘non-elegant’ way. Some other favorites are Stella McCartney’s Eclypse and Louis Vuitton’s Archlight sneakers.

5. Feminism Slogans

Fashion has always been a medium for self-expression. This season, fashion plays a political role to protest against the violation of women rights. All the designers have put a great attention to the importance of women rights. Dior designer Maria Grazia Chiuri’s t-shirt declared “We Should All Be Feminists” became an immediate social media success. New Yorker Jonathan Simkhai gifted his front-row guests to his show with “Feminist AF” shirts. The provocative, the better. Off-White designed t-shirts that scream ‘woman’. The slogan tees are everywhere this season, and a great way to demonstrate your take on the subject as a woman.

I could add numerous elements to this list to explain this season like fringes, trousers suits, belt bags, waist belts, colorful stripes, pencil skirts, prints… It could go on forever. However, I would say that the trends above are the ‘creme de la creme’ of the upcoming season, the major elements that need attention. I hope that this list could give you some ideas on your next shopping, and help you prepare your SS18 wardrobe!

Love,

Lale
