Life Lessons Learned from Sex and the City

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

From its glitz, glam and immaculate fashion to the four gal pals who somehow managed to conquer NYC, Sex and the City is a show that truly speaks to the soul. Although the show’s primetime passed long ago, it continues to endure for its charm and ability to relate to viewers: everyone has a friend they can call a Miranda, Charlotte, Carrie, or Samantha. Through nearly a decade of modern love, life and impeccable fashion advice, here are some of our favorite lessons we learned from Sex and the City:

1. Fashion is cathartic. Carrie understood this better than anyone else.

“Sometimes, I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I just felt it fed me more.”

2. No matter the generation, it’s all about girl power. Women should never be underestimated or undermined in any capacity when compared with the opposite sex. #feminism

“Are men just women with balls?”

3. Your close friends will always be there for you.

“And finally, the most important break up rule: no matter who broke your heart, or how long it takes to heal, you’ll never go through it, without your friends.”

4. Letting go is a GOOD THING.

“Sometimes we need to stop analyzing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out precisely how we feel, stop deciding exactly what we want, and just see what happens.”

5. Always stay true to yourself.

“But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous.”

6. There’s always a silver lining.

“The universe may not always play fair, but at least it’s got a hell of a sense of humor.”

7. Don’t lose hope in love, even when things may seem dismal.

“Love is dangerous, if you know it’s dangerous, that makes you treasure it, and you’ll work harder to keep it.”

8. And finally, ladies, you don’t need a man to define to you.

“I can safely conclude that we are single because we want to be.”
