A Lazy Girl’s Guide to Looking Put Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I’m not proud of it, but I’m a lazy girl. I give myself less than 15 minutes to get ready in the mornings and I prioritize comfort, but by keeping these few items in my closet, I can save my appearance from reflecting this laziness.

1. Loafers

Loafers are back and bigger than ever! When I see a woman wearing loafers, I immediately think that she must have everything together and under control. Loafers are comfortable but fashionable and sophisticated but fun. Invest in a pair of these to instantly elevate your look! Here’s a classic pair by Everlane!

2. Jewelry

Even if you’re in your comfy sweats and a denim jacket, wearing a good amount of jewelry will make you look effortlessly cool. The best thing about jewelry is that simple pieces go with just about anything and you can wear the same staple pieces every single day. Some of my favorite places to get more affordable jewelry are Madewell and Gorjana (sold at Nordstrom).

3. Jackets

If your closet is made up of mostly basics, you can dress up any outfit with a jacket. Bomber jackets, leather jackets, denim jackets, or anything else you please. They are cozy, fashionable, and create the illusion that you put time into your outfit even though you didn’t have to! One of my absolute favorite places to buy outerwear is Zara because it’s on trend and usually pretty affordable!

4. Lipstick

Now, I know this one may seem odd, but a bold lip is the easiest way to distinguish yourself! You don’t need to put on a full face of makeup to create the illusion that you spent a lot of time getting ready in the morning. All it takes is a bold lip or winged eyeliner and you’ve achieved that put-together look!

5. Style your hair

I know this one sounds simple, but it makes a HUGE difference! Trying a half-up-half-down style or even a simple bun only takes a few seconds and it will tie your whole look together! If you’re running out of time in the morning you can do this part on your way to class or in the bathroom at school… it’s seriously too easy and will transform your whole look! One of my favorite things to do for this is to go on YouTube and watch videos such as “short hair hairstyles” for inspiration!

6. Belts, belts, belts

I get it, sometimes wearing a belt can be uncomfortable, and for this reason, I usually don’t wear them to class. But if I’m going to brunch with friends on the weekend or going shopping, I find that wearing a belt can really take a look to the next level. You can find classic black ones or fun ones to add a pop of color to your look! A few of my favorites are from J Crew as seen above!

Something I always revert to for inspiration is Instagram! A few of my favorite accounts are Lauren Elizabeth, Alex Centomo, Candidly Chan, and Alexa Losey. They all focus on outfit inspiration that feature basics paired with trendy accessories! This is the perfect lazy girl hack because you don’t have to spend time planning your outfits, you can copy what you see online or choose to put your own spin on it!
