Kunal Khurana (SMED ’18)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Ambitious, out-spoken, and a frequent nap-taker, Kunal Khurana is well known throughout the BU community. Following his former internship at the National Institutes of Health back in D.C., Kunal is a freshman in the SMED Program. He resides in Warren Towers, where the other students on his floor know him as the floor clown. Conforming to this label, Kunal admits, “I have two states of existence. Either really goofy, or really smart.”

Frequently encouraged to go into the medical field as a child, Kunal aspires to be a cardiologist, promising to “treat broken hearts”. He chose Boston University “for the prestigious seven year medical and liberal arts educational program”, saving him from “having to apply to medical school.” Contrary to common belief that medical students are constantly busy with work, Kunal is grateful for his decision, claiming “I can have fun in college while still becoming a doctor.”

Part of this fun is that Kunal can pursue dancing, as he did in high school, here at BU. “I love to dance. I’m on the Bhangra Dance Team. It’s a very high-energy dance that originated in the Northern region of India, known as Punjab. This year BU Bhangra is performing at Boston Bhungra Competition, which is one of the biggest in the country. I’m very excited because this will be the biggest performance I ever had. It’s November 22nd.” Being an active member of Bhangra Dance, Kunal still manages to indulge in the college experience. “My greatest college experience was going to a nightclub with some of my friends. I had a great time,” Kunal recalls, thinking about his first semester.

Considering his time away from D.C., Kunal states, “I actually do not miss home. I really don’t miss home”, remembering his parents’ endless nagging about grades. He adjusted well to the move, and enjoys the variety that the BU campus has to offer. “My favorite spot on campus is the Esplanade. I love to go for walks there.”

Aside from being a successful doctor and living in Montana, in ten years, Kunal sees himself “sitting on top of the Prudential Tower with a bottle of champagne and a beautiful girl, enjoying the view.”
