If ‘Stranger Things’ Characters Went To BU in 2025

As much as we’re obsessed with the 80s setting of “Stranger Things,” what if our beloved characters were transported to the 21st century and were BU students like the rest of us?

Here’s my take on it:

Eleven

I think it would be fitting for El to study psychology to help her better understand herself — maybe even have a minor in criminal justice, due to Hopper’s influence. She’d live in Kilachand with Max since they’re both smart and love a clean, calm atmosphere.

She’d definitely sign up for FitRec classes, especially boxing, to maintain her strength. And, of course, she’d still have Eggos for breakfast every morning.

Will

Will would major in something creative, like the fine arts, specifically painting. He’s clearly talented, based on his painting for Mike, and I think it’d be a good outlet for stress and anxiety.

He’d live in Warren Towers, with Mike as his roommate; he’d hate it there, but would suck it up because Lucas and Dustin also live there. His main hobby would be taking long walks on the esplanade to clear his head, and he’d probably sketch people as they pass by.

Max

Max would double major in psychology and music because she’d be so intrigued to learn more about the mind after being stuck in Henry’s, and well, music is self-explanatory. She’d skateboard along the esplanade with her Beats headphones on, blasting ‘Running Up That Hill’ on repeat.

She’s the effortlessly cool person you have a friend crush on and would totally be a part of WTBU Radio with Robin. She and El live in Kilachand, where they constantly steal each other’s clothes and stay up late psychoanalyzing everyone they know.

Nancy

Nancy would, of course, study journalism and be at the top of her class. She’d be heavily involved in the Daily Free Press and definitely on the editorial team for Her Campus.

She’d live in HoJo with Robin in a colorful, beautifully chaotic room and do weekly deep cleans. Then Robin would immediately re-clutter it with dining hall cups and snacks. Nancy would be heavily reliant on Google Calendar, and it’d be full all day, every day. Even in her free time, she’d be writing.

Mike

Mike would be a political science major because he loves arguing and debating moral questions. He’d be highly invested in his classes, attend office hours religiously to butt heads with professors, and be in Model UN, taking it way too seriously.

He’d live with Will, but they’d spend half of their time in Lucas and Dustin’s room testing Dustin’s newest inventions.

Lucas

Lucas would study health sciences after being impressed by Max’s treatment of El’s wound, and because he genuinely wants to understand how the body works. He would be the sportiest in the group and would join an intramural basketball team.

He would have wanted to live in StuVi 2 with the athletes, but instead got dragged into Warren with Dustin. He’d be whipping down Comm. Ave. on a scooter, teasing the others for using Bluebikes. He’s friends with everyone and brings Max flowers and snacks from CityCo every Friday.

Robin

Robin would major in linguistics with a minor in international relations. She loves languages and is passionate about global issues, so it’s a fitting choice. She would be that person who has an absurdly long Duolingo streak, something like 1300 days, but actually retains everything she learns.

She’d be the person who shows up to class late with a coffee in hand, yet is somehow besties with her professors. She’d live with Nancy in HoJo and constantly try to drag her out with her and Steve on weekends, but Nancy would rarely go.

Dustin

Dustin would be an engineering or robotics major because he built his own radio at Camp Know Where. He’d have started BU’s own Hellfire Club with the other three and incorporated a tribute to Eddie so everyone would know about him.

Dustin would live in Warren with Lucas, staying up all night building gadgets while on FaceTime with Suzie. His secret hobby would be posting consistently on YikYak and somehow always getting 150+ upvotes.

Steve

Steve would major in hospitality because he is fantastic with people and has plenty of experience caring for others. He would live in a StuVi 1 single thanks to his “pretty privilege” and charm at the housing office.

He and Robin would go out to bars and clubs as each other’s wingmen, then spend the next morning hungover watching movies Robin forces Steve to catch up on. He would also be in a very active TikTok group chat with all six kids, sending mostly brain-rot and prank videos.

Jonathan

Jonathan would be studying film & TV or photography. He’d keep to himself and spend most of his time in his room or taking pictures around campus, especially of the Charles River and Bay State Road. He’d live with a group of friends in a South Campus dorm who smoke together every night while listening to 70s and 80s indie music.

What do you guys think? Does this feel like how they’d live at BU? And while we wait for more episodes of Season 5, what theories do you all have about how it ends?
