How To Survive Your First Real Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

A huge part of BU’s student population comes from states and regions with a warm climate year round. And while the appeal of seasons actually being real can be very enticing, sometimes they’re a little too real. For those who are facing their first ever “real” winter, you’re going to be fine. People have lived in the northeast for centuries before central heating was even a thing. But just in case you’re still a little panicked about what’s to come, here are some tips for surviving your first winter.

Stock up now on everything!

That quick fifteen-minute walk to Target is going to feel a lot longer once it starts snowing. Make sure you’re not running low on dorm items like hair and beauty products or even snacks for your room before it gets too cold. Plus, it’s always nice to have some surplus in case your dormmates need anything.

Don’t be afraid to splurge on essentials

As a college student, pretty much everyone is on a budget. While it can be tempting to be cheaper on boots or a coat, quality is way more important than price. Usually more expensive items are much more durable and will last you throughout the entire winter, making them worth the cost. Also if you’re able to, snagging items around September can be a lot cheaper than right before winter starts.

Enjoy the cold!

Sure it would be nice to be able to go outside in flip-flops and a t-shirt, but winter is actually amazing. There’s something about the snow that makes you so appreciative of snuggling up in a warm blanket or drinking hot cocoa. And without snow, there would be no snow days!

Winter is an amazing time of year in Boston and there’s no need to panic about the upcoming cold. Plus, if all else fails, you can always sneak back to warmer climates during winter break!
