How to Stay Fashionably Warm This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

As the temperature creeps lower and lower, the amount of clothes we have to wear to stay warm gets higher and higher. Oftentimes, people tend to associate warmth with baggy clothes like sweatshirts and sweatpants. However, here are five foolproof tips and tricks on how to stay warm and cute all winter!

Find a Flattering Coat

Just because it’s freezing doesn’t mean you have to wear a giant puffy coat that hides your curves. For that in-between fall and winter weather, you can find tons of cute peacoats in a variety of different colors and styles.

Try these!

As for snowy winter fun, any down jacket will do the trick; they are insanely warm, and breathable too! Packable down is super great because you can squish it up small and stuff it in your backpack during class. But if you’re looking for a larger coat for grueling below-zero weather, make sure it falls past your hips and is wind and water resistant. It’s an investment, so spend your money on a good one that will last you a few years.

Stock up on cozy sweaters

You can never go wrong with a sweater, unless it’s 80 degrees and sunny. But when the temperature starts to plummet, sweaters are a reliable piece of clothing to have on demand. They’re chic stand-ins for sloppy sweatshirts, and you can style them many ways. Wear them over a button-down for a smart look, over a dress for a preppy vibe or under a jacket for an edgier style.

Gloves and hats aren’t ugly

Your main concerns are that hats ruin your hair and gloves inhibit hand movement. However, a cute beanie or furry hat can go with any outfit. Beanies give off the best edgy-yet-boho vibe. Fur vests and jackets are in, so you might as well wear fur on your head! That means extra warmth and fabulosity for your gorgeous noggin!

 Try these!

Gloves, like coats, don’t have to be chunky and uncomfortable! You can get tons of warm gloves that don’t inhibit movement. In fact, anything covering your hands is good. You can get super basic adorable knit gloves from Target, or you can splurge on a swanky pair of mittens!

 Try these!

Socks and tights are your friend!

Don’t hang up your dresses and skirts for the winter! Tights, leggings and socks are perfect to amp up your outfits and help you stay warm in the winter.  Wear socks with tights and booties for added comfort. For those especially chilly days, many companies make fleece-lined leggings and tights that can be swapped in for your everyday pairs.

 Try these!

Layers, layers, layers!

Layering is the key to staying warm in the winter. If you do nothing else, layer! It allows you to have the most creative license with your wardrobe, and you can add and take off clothes as needed whether you’re indoors or going out. My favorite way to layer is with a button-down,  sweater and jacket, but you can do anything you want! The possibilities are endless.

So, there you have it, collegiettes! Cold weather doesn’t mean that you have to resort to sweats and uncomfortably puffy coats. You can be warm, and still be fashionable. Now go bear that freezing winter in style!
