How I Decided to Change My Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

When I was in middle school I wanted to work in fashion. I imagined writing for a fashion magazine and living a glamorous life. That’s when everyone started telling me that writing is a dying profession. I knew print publications were becoming less popular, and I guess I let all of this convince me to abandon my dreams. I only heard people saying I would make no money and it was a bad idea, so I just gave up.

I spent high school pushing off the task of deciding what I wanted to do with my life. I listened to the advice of my parents and teachers telling me I had time and not to worry about it now. Next thing I knew, I was a senior and was applying for colleges. Yet again, I didn’t look to myself for answers about what I should pursue but took suggestions from others to go into the medical field. I did summer programs and had enough fun, so I settled for that field to study in college.

I loved coming to college, especially in Boston. If there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I was captivated by the city. I never wanted to go back to my small town, but there was still something missing at the end of the day. I wasn’t happy with the career path I was following. I wasn’t excited about science and healthcare, so I hoped a new idea of what to study would just appear one day.

I constantly worried I wasn’t ever going to find anything I was passionate about. I feared I would be stuck doing something I hated just to get a degree and have a job. I took every career aptitude test on the internet and finally realized I had to go out and discover my passion. I started getting back into writing with Her Campus and I met with advisors to try and narrow things down.

I had always been interested in history and government, and when I started to explore the idea of journalism everything was clear. I saw myself in the city, getting to travel and immerse myself in current events or just writing about something personal. Journalism is the field that encompasses all other fields. Writing is so powerful and has the ability to make a difference about any topic. There are no limitations to what you can write and this concept drew me further into writing. Somehow my future really did just hit me like I hoped it would. It took a while for me to stop listening to what adults were telling me and finally rediscovered my love for writing.

The city was my true passion, but it helped me find out who I really was. BU pushed me to dream big and never give up on my goals. I know that my time here will only help to further my future.
