Since you entered the world of college a few short weeks ago, you’ve been able to convince yourself that the tiny showers are adequate, the beds are kinda comfortable, and the food tastes, you know, okay. But. It’s about halfway through the first semester and you are probably starting to realize how much you miss the home-cooked meals, the weekly laundry service, and the glorious high-pressure showers (with consistent heat!). Whether you’re coming from across the world or across the river, chances are you’ve been homesick at school. Not to worry, here is some advice on how to deal with the transition – and hopefully become much happier and more independent in the process.

Getting involved on campus is a great way to form a closer-knit community among others with similar interests. Whether it is a club sport or the school newspaper, becoming a part of a campus activity will surely take your mind off of home and get you excited about being a new member of your school! Stay busy, and stay out of your dorm room!

Keeping in touch with loved ones at home by phone calls, texts, or video chats is an important part of the process. However, make sure to limit these phone calls to a reasonable amount (calling your mommy 10 times a day is not advised). It is healthy to call home a few times a week to share eventful days, ask for care packages, or just to chat for a few minutes about all of the new friends you are making!

Stay Healthy! It is crucial to have normal eating and sleeping habits in order to remain healthy. If you don’t pay attention to your health status and engage in irregular sleeping and eating patterns, your immune system will become weak and it will be harder for you to be physically and emotionally strong. Going to the gym or exercising can also be a great way to stay healthy and get your mind off of home!

After speaking to my international roommate Xin Jin, from the city of Zheng Zhou China, I was able to get her perspective on handling her first real experience away from home. She responded, “I like it here and am still really excited about all of the new things that are going on, but I miss the food from home. I sometimes eat at the Beijing Café down the street, and often go into China Town where there are some great restaurants!” Xin Jin also finds herself video chatting with her family in China every few days. She says, “It is hard to talk sometimes because of the different time zones and I am often studying, but my mom waits for me until I am free so it works out.” Xin Jin keeps herself busy on campus by hanging out with friends, attending the Television Club, and studying, all of which keep her mind off of homesickness.

Hopefully you’ll find these tips helpful. College is considered to be one of the best times of your life, so go enjoy yourself!
