Having nicknamed his parents the “global nomads”, Gommert Mes proves that we are all products of how we are raised, as he has become nothing short of a budding jetsetter himself.  After establishing himself as a prominent DJ at many clubs and events in the Boston area, including Estate and Splash, Gommert has many people wondering where he got his start.

Growing up in the Netherlands among his multi-cultural family, Gommert found stability and passion in music.  “In the Netherlands, you live with your radio.  Music is an international influence, and I believe life is nothing without music,” he says. Music has always been a prominent part of Gommert’s life: “My parents were always very involved in music.  They encouraged me from the start… my brother and I were always trying different instruments, guitar, and piano.  Seeing the Rolling Stones when I was twelve really drew me to the atmosphere of performing and passion behind music.”

As a teenager, Gommert eventually found his musical niche in DJing, specializing in house music. He clarifies the distinction among the different types of electronic music: “House is more vocal, techno is more beats and glitchy.  I tend to focus more on house music.”

“You can’t judge music, there is merit in all genres and artists,” says Gommert, who is reluctant to name just one of his many favorite artists. And he seems to be gaining quite the following himself. Gommert is busy DJing two or three times a month. He has done shows in several countries; his largest show was in Costa Rica with Tiesto in front of a 5,000 person crowd. Gommert loves a good audience—he thrives off of the energy in crowds.

Ultimately Gommert describes his work as “the stuff you play at 2 a.m. when everyone’s getting along and just having a good time.  It’s not about getting with girls or being violent; it’s more of a loving concept–that’s what house music is all about: love for the music, love for the life.”

While you can catch Gommert DJing at local clubs, you may just as easily run into him in the halls of BU’s School of Management.  “I was drawn to BU and SMG’s international appeal. I have always had an interest in economics, and I thought that a background in business would give me the most options for careers outside of my passion for DJing.” Despite his success, Gommert can confidently state that he will never consider DJing a job. “When you enjoy your work, it’s leisure, not a job.  Calling DJing a job narrows things down and you are no longer a free artistic spirit; you have to conform to certain labels,” he says.

The self-proclaimed perfectionist ensures that, “Everything I put out I’m really proud of…I want to be able to stand behind all of my tracks and be 100% confident about them, or I just won’t release them.” Gommert’s spring break will be spent in Los Angeles, completing some in-the-works tracks.
