Getaway House— My Weekend Experience in A Tiny House

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Nestled in the woods of New Hampshire sits a community of cabins stretching across 40 acres of land. Getaway House, a company that allows guests to rent tiny houses, creates an unforgettable experience of being unplugged, relaxed, and connected with nature.

I spent the weekend with my boyfriend at the Boston Outpost, located in Epsom, NH. We arrived on Friday night and drove through the maze of trails to finally find our cabin, which like all the others had a name, ours being Tim. Tim consisted of a large bed next to a window that encompassed the entire wall, a small kitchen, a table, some shelves with food and activities on them, and a small bathroom. The entire layout was so clean and modern that it was hard to not fall in love with it.

The table had a note greeting us and encouraging us to spend the weekend relaxing. They also included a s’mores kit which we enjoyed later that night over a fire. I never thought I could bring myself to go outside in December, in New Hampshire, to sit around a fire, but Getaway changed my mind. We even were able to cook over the fire, finally fulfilling my boyfriend’s culinary dreams.

We had bought groceries prior to our arrives which is necessary for a stay at these tiny houses. They offer a few things for purchase if you need, but it was easier for us to plan ahead. We used the peace and unlimited time to make delicious meals and sit around all day soaking in the fact that we didn’t have to do anything.

We woke up to the giant window and the sun, but we didn’t mind the brightness that filled the cabin. It was nice to not worry about clocks and do things on our own time when we wanted to. During the day, we walked around the land and did some exploring. One interesting thing I noticed about Getaway was that were no mirrors. Whether or not this was intentional, it provided the absence of self-scrutiny.

The area near Getaway Boston offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. Northwood Lake is located 10 minutes from the cabins, Bear Brook Park is 15 minutes, and Oak Hills Trail is about 20 minutes away. You can even bring your dog to stay with you and bring on hikes!

If you’re looking for a weekend of doing absolutely nothing and reconnecting with yourself and people you love, consider booking a stay with Getaway!
