Five iPhone Apps for the Everyday Collegiette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

When I first got my iPhone around two years ago, apps were a source of endless fascination and entertainment. Now that the novelty of my iPhone has worn off, I often forget to take advantage of all the really cool things that my phone can do. In addition to the essential Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, here are five other free apps that I use regularly and would recommend for every other college girl.

  1. Evernote: This app provides one convenient place for all of your notes and lists. If you have a MacBook or iPad, you can get the app and sync files across devices. Evernote is super easy to use and perfect for taking notes during lecture—you can add images from the web to your notes and organize them into different notebooks for each subject.
  2. Wikipanion: This app is essentially Wikipedia in user-friendly mobile format. The search capability makes topics more readily accessible than Google’s app if you’re looking for a few fast facts. With Wikipanion, you can also bookmark pages, view your search history, and save images from the app to your phone’s photo library.
  3. Flipboard: This app combines everything you love about your iPhone into one app. The app organizes featured material under different titles, allowing you to customize your account. News, Travel, Fashion, you name it—Flipboard aggregates material on each topic from across the web, allowing you to “flip” through articles and images at your leisure. The app also allows you to log into your Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, so your social networking feeds are visible as well.
  4. 8tracks: This app is an online radio service much like Pandora, only playlists are generated by users. Choose any mood or genre and 8tracks will link you to a selection of playlists from over 750,000 that have been created by others using the app. Although the app limits you on how many songs you can skip each hour, there are no obnoxious audio ads. You can also favorite playlists and check out other playlists by that user.
  5. AroundMe: This app lists the nearest restaurants, supermarkets, movie theaters, coffee shops, etc. to your current location. AroundMe also displays the distances to each and maps the quickest route for you. I always use this app when I’m in the city and I’m looking for a nearby ATM or a bite to eat.
